Jason Statham Proves He’s Still The Man

What happens when you combine the powers of the director (Jean-François Richet) behind the absolutely smashing Plane and Jason Statham wrecking human traffickers left and right? You get Mutiny. Now the movie isn’t just called Boat or Ship, and it really isn’t part of the “Jason Statham Has A Job Cinematic Universe,” but it still brings us some of the best action of the year. The film follows Cole Reed (Statham), who’s a driver and bodyguard for a billionaire industrialist. He’s murdered right in front of Cole in an ambush and guess who gets blamed for it?

Well, from there, Cole has to find out who’s actually responsible for the murder and prove his innocence. From the get-go, this one doesn’t seem like it’ll actually be about Jason Statham kicking human trafficker ass, but it ends up going that way. These days, human traffickers might have a 0% approval rating amongst general audiences, so seeing them (and the people who help them) get taken out to the cleaners by Jason Statham should have a 100% approval rating. Along the way, Cole ends up on a cargo ship with a new first mate played by Annabelle Wallis. The captain, Marko (played by Roland Møller) has something to hide from her, and she quickly ends up on the bad side of the entire crew.

What ends up happening is that Captain Marko and his crew are dirty. They’re working for the people who killed Cole’s boss AND they’re human traffickers. Now, as we mentioned before, that’s not the best occupation to have around Jason Statham. Together, Cole and his new partner on the ship have to fight their way off the boat and help out the people being trafficked.

Jason Statham Uses A Harpoon Gun AND Superplexes The Bad Guy Onto A Gangway

Cole Reed is an ass-kicking machine in Mutiny. But its still a great time to see Statham go head-to-head with these guys on this ship. The various action setpieces all build up to a final confrontation between the Captain and Cole. Its the heavyweight fight that we’ve been waiting for this entire movie and it does not disappoint. They beat the holy hell out of each other, the fight spills out to a side part of the boat with a gangway.

If you don’t watch pro wrestling or know what a superplex is, enlighten yourself here. That’s what Cole does to the Captain, and the fight doesn’t even stop there. Like Plane before it, Mutiny might look like a mindless brainless action movie on the surface, but there are some exceptional performances here. Annabelle Wallis is fantastic in her own right and gets to kick some ass herself. She plays nicely off the gruff and stern Statham and gives the movie a soft touch that’s must needed.

Adrian Lester, in a small role as a US Navy Captain is also great as the mystery of the film is unveiled. And of course, Roland Møller is every bit a match for Cole, which makes their confrontation that much better. The guys that get in the way of Cole and his goals are all intimidating and Ben Cartwright as Lieutenant Underwood is slimy and really makes you hate these guys on the ship.

Sometimes, You Just Need Some “Everything Is Going To Be Okay, Jason Statham Is Here” Comfort

Jason Statham doing his best John McClane impersonation in Mutiny.

Full disclosure, I saw Mutiny at a screening room at Lionsgate’s offices with one other critic. This movie feels like it would only get better with a crowd. There were several scenes that elicited either a “oh OH OHHHHH” from me or the feeling of wanting to fist-pump like Tiger Woods nailing a putt. (To that other critic, my apologies, but these types of movies jazz me the HELL up.) We live in dark times, people are depressed, they’re stressed out, I certainly am. So yes, the theater-going experience can be filled with movies that reflect that dark time, and the opposite end is a movie like Mutiny.

Like I’ve said about his previous string of movies, there’s something comforting and nice knowing about these types of movies. The hero might get put into bad situations where it looks like they’re getting their ass kicked, but somehow, Statham always comes through. It might not be perfect, but Mutiny does the job of electrifying the audience with some kinetic action, Die Hard-ish stylings, and adversaries that actually feel like they’re equals to our heroes.

In Mutiny, Daddy is home, with Daddy being Jason Statham. That means one thing…

The human traffickers are TOAST.

Mutiny releases in theaters on August 21st, 2026.
