‘Hirayasumi’ Reveals First Anime Footage In New Teaser Trailer And More

Hirayasumi is probably a title few are familiar with here in the U.S. of A. However, in its home nation of Japan, it’s one of the hottest new entries in the iyashikei genre, which consists of peaceful slice of life stories meant to calm the reader / viewer. In fact, this manga series by Keigo Shinzō not only has 10 tankōbon volumes so far, but it even has a 20-episode live-action TV drama based off of it made just recently in 2025. Combined with the story winning the 71st Shogakukan Manga Award just this year in 2026, and you can understand why its upcoming anime adaptation is getting such attention. Especially when it’s quite a bit of news all at once like in this story.

Viz Media is proud to reveal new details about the upcoming anime adaptation of Hirayasumi in a new teaser trailer. Said teaser trailer also confirms that this anime will make its debut sometime next year in 2027. In addition to that teaser trailer though, Viz Media is also giving us the lead Japanese voice cast (complete with comments by each cast member), a new key visual, and even a synopsis to tease the plot a bit.

Yuma Uchida as Hiroto Ikuta

Character Profile: Hiroto Ikuta

Hiroto, 29, is an easygoing part-time worker living in Asagaya. A free spirit with no girlfriend and little anxiety about the future, he rarely dwells on life’s bigger worries — although he takes the question of what to have for dinner very seriously. He lives in the single-story house he inherited from Granny.

Character Profile: Natsumi Kobayashi

Hiroto’s cousin Natsumi moves from Yamagata to Tokyo to attend art school. Shy and somewhat self-conscious, she dreams of becoming a manga artist but keeps the ambition to herself. Her more serious nature frequently puts her at odds with the perpetually carefree Hiroto.

“All of the characters are very kind. And yet, deep inside, they carry pain and worries of their own. Hirayasumi brings not so much a flutter in the heart, but a catch in the chest, followed by a slow, tender swell of emotion.  A work that I love has become an anime, and I portray Hanae Wada, whom Hiroto calls “Granny.” And so, here I am: a catch in my chest, followed by that slow, tender swell of emotion.”

Character Profile: Hanae Wada

Hanae Wada, 83, is a retired school lunch worker living on a pension. After meeting Hiroto through an unexpected turn of events, the two begin sharing dinner twice a week. Though she can appear blunt and stubborn, she grows fond of Hiroto and worries about his future.

Synopsis

At 29 years old, carefree Hiroto Ikuta doesn’t have a girlfriend, a full-time job, or a plan for the future—and he couldn’t be happier. Hiroto’s breezy attitude isn’t easy for everyone to understand, though. In a world filled with anxiety, confusion, and grief, Hiroto and the people around him are all just doing their best to figure out this thing called life.

Hirayasumi Looking Good for 2027 Debut

Honestly, all of this new information about Hirayasumi is giving us a good idea of what to expect for when we eventually see it in 2027. It sounds…exactly like what the genre generally is. It’s basically a relaxing slice of life story about an average guy who suddenly finds himself effectively a single father to a much younger relative. There’s certainly quite a bit of sad drama mixed in due to the stpry arc involving “granny”, but overall, this looks very much like an anime for people looking to take a break from the harsh reality.

Really, the only thing to worry about here is the lack of any precise release window aside from next year. Fortunately, that will likely come in the near future, so we won’t have too long to wait before we can calm those anxieties down.
