With The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 about to make its long-awaited debut, it’s only fitting that Though I Am an Inept Villainess is getting some love too. After all, both anime series are political drama stories that take place in an alternate medieval China and feature female leading stars and a mostly female cast. Not only that, but both of them feature Toho Animation Studio as either the studio directly involved in making the anime or at least an important benefactor. All in spite of Toho officially not listed in the production of Though I Am an Inept Villainess, with Doga Kobo listed as the animation studio for that anime instead. Thus, we can explain why Toho is announcing this story for today instead of Doga Kobo.
Toho Animation is proud to announce the upcoming second cours of the anime adaptation of Though I Am an Inept Villainess. With that second cours getting the title of “The First Royal Outing” arc. In fact, this announcement is coming right after the first cours of this anime adaptation of Satsuki Nakamura’s light novel series has just finished airing / streaming. The second cours will begin sometime in January 2027.
The announcement also comes with additions to the Japanese voice cast, as well as a synopsis for that upcoming second cours. You can find the details below:

Synopsis
Through Reirin and Keigetsu’s actions, the series of disturbances caused by a curse in the inner court has settled down. Through their swap, Reirin and Keigetsu learned about each other’s character, and a friendship began to bud between them.
Seasons pass, and we are now in early autumn. The ritual where the Crown Prince and the Maidens wish for a bountiful harvest (the Harvest Festival) has been set in the southern lands ruled by the Shu clan. With no consort as guardian, Keigetsu continues preparations despite the pressure of hosting the Harvest Festival. Meanwhile, Reirin wholeheartedly supports Keigetsu while being thrilled about her first royal outing.
However, right upon arrival, an unforeseen accident occurs, and the ritual is interrupted. An agitated Keigetsu’s spell runs out of control, and she once again swaps bodies with Reirin. On top of that, amid all the confusion, the post-swap Reirin is abducted…!?
Reirin’s two overprotective brothers, Kou Keikou and Kou Keishou, get involved, and the situation takes an unexpected turn. Who is the new mastermind sneaking in to frame Keigetsu…? Though I Am an Inept Villainess Getting Second Cours in January 2027
Honestly, this is quite the success story for Though I Am an Inept Villainess. Few other anime series have gotten announcements about a second cours while their first cours is still ongoing. It’s certainly a sign that Toho and Doga Kobo think that this is going to be a hit anime with global audiences.
Especially for fans of The Apothecary Diaries. Fans of Maomao’s adventures in the inner court will readily recognize the similarities between that and Though I Am an Inept Villainess. And based on all the hype that the latter is getting, it might also be a treat for fans of The Apothecary Diaries too. If you can’t wait for The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 to make its debut on October 2, 2026; then may I suggest giving this anime a shot?
