Snoop Dogg is getting the big screen biopic treatment. Universal Pictures has announced that Snoop. A new film chronicling the rise of the legendary rapper, entrepreneur, and cultural icon, will hit theatres on August 6, 2027.
The film takes the place of Universal’s previously announced Untitled Universal Event Film, moving into a summer release date that could make it one of the studio’s major theatrical releases of 2027. The project will be the first film produced under Death Row Pictures’ overall deal with NBC Universal Entertainment, making the movie an important milestone for Snoop Dogg beyond simply telling his life story.
Jonathan Daviss to Play Snoop Dogg
Outer Banks star Jonathan Daviss has been cast in the titular role. Taking on the enormous challenge of portraying one of the most recognizable figures in the history of hip hop. Daviss is best known for playing Pope Heyward on Netflix’s hit teen drama Outer Banks. Snoop will allow the young actor to take on a dramatically different role.
The movie will follow Snoop Dogg’s journey from his early years to becoming one of the defining voices of West Coast gangsta rap; before evolving into a global entertainment mogul and pop culture icon. His career has spanned music, film, television, business, sports, food, and countless other ventures. Giving the filmmakers plenty of material to explore.
The film is expected to incorporate music from Snoop Dogg’s extensive catalog. Allowing audiences to experience some of his biggest songs alongside the story of the man behind them.
Craig Brewer Takes the Director’s Chair
Craig Brewer will direct Snoop from his rewrite of an original screenplay by Joe Robert Cole. Brewer brings plenty of experience with music driven stories to the project. He previously directed Hustle & Flow, the acclaimed 2005 drama about a Memphis rapper fighting to break into the music industry, and more recently helmed Song Sung Blue, another music focused drama.
Brewer’s experience working with stories centred around musicians makes him an intriguing choice to bring Snoop Dogg’s life to the big screen. Hustle & Flow in particular demonstrated his ability to balance the realities of the music business with the personal struggles of artists trying to find their voice.
Universal Knows How to Make a Music Biopic
The announcement comes as Universal continues a strong run with music-focused biographical films. The studio has been involved with several successful projects centred around major recording artists. Including the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton and Eminem’s semi-autobiographical drama 8 Mile.
Straight Outta Compton became a major box office success in 2015. Earning approximately $201.6 million worldwide. While 8 Mile grossed approximately $242.8 million worldwide. Universal also handled international distribution for Lionsgate’s Michael, which has gone on to surpass $1 billion globally.
That track record gives Universal plenty of reason to be confident in Snoop. The combination of a globally recognizable subject. A deep catalogue of popular music. And a filmmaker with experience telling music industry stories could make the film a major theatrical draw.
A Busy Summer 2027 Release Date
Snoop hits theatres on August 6, 2027, right in the middle of the summer movie season. The film will compete with several other major releases, including Jason Statham’s Stole My Bike from Black Bear and Disney’s upcoming untitled Bluey movie, both of which are currently scheduled to open the following weekend on August 7.
The release calendar could change significantly before 2027, but Universal clearly sees Snoop as a major theatrical event. Snoop Dogg will produce the film alongside Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer and Death Row Pictures President Sara Ramaker, giving the project plenty of personal investment from the people closest to the story.
For fans of hip hop and music biopics, Snoop could become one of the genre’s most fascinating entries. Snoop Dogg’s journey from a young rapper to one of the world’s most recognizable entertainers has included music, controversy, reinvention, and enormous cultural influence.
