Willem Dafoe is throwing a birthday party, but the celebration may leave his empire in ruins. Lionsgate+ has released the official trailer for The Birthday Party, a psychological thriller set against the wealth and decadence of a private Mediterranean island.
Dafoe stars as Markos Timoleon, a Greek billionaire who gathers family, friends, and opportunists to celebrate the 25th birthday of his daughter and sole heir, Sofia. What begins as a lavish affair gradually becomes a pressure cooker as guests pursue their own agendas, Markos plots a major decision on his daughter’s behalf, and Sofia arrives with life-changing news of her own.
Written and directed by Miguel Ángel Jiménez, the film also stars Vic Carmen Sonne, Joe Cole, Emma Suárez and Carlos Cuevas. Its late-1970s setting and Dafoe’s Aristotle Onassis-inspired tycoon give the increasingly volatile family drama an especially stylish backdrop.
The Birthday Party begins streaming Thursday, October 8, exclusively through Lionsgate+ on Prime Video. Check out the new trailer below.

The party is a perfect excuse for various people in his life to approach him with their own agendas. But Marcos, who is used to ruthlessly controlling everything and everyone around him at whatever cost, is also secretly plotting a big decision on his daughter’s behalf. Sofia, however, has come to share some important news of her own. As guests start pouring in and night falls, the party grows rowdier and more decadent, while the inevitable clash between Marcos and Sofia reaches a heartbreaking climax.
