Of Course Alamo Drafthouse’s Stephen Colbert Tribute Involves Lord Of The Rings

This week marks the end of an era in late night television.  After an emotional finale, CBS’ The Late Show no longer exists – with its host Stephen Colbert exiting the chat show sphere. It feels like a shadowy time, but to quote The Lord of the Rings franchise, “even darkness must pass.” In a sense, Alamo Drafthouse is helping to fulfill that prophecy, through a special gesture they’ve now released to their YouTube channel.

Stephen Colbert’s Lord Of The Rings Reunions Are Now Streaming For Free

Another time of temporary darkness gives us this delightful news, as all three of Alamo Drafthouse’s Lord of the Rings cast reunions are once more available to watch. The company’s YouTube channel is now home to these Zoom chats, conducted by The Colbert Report veteran during the early pandemic days of 2021. Here’s part of what the company had to say, celebrating this news in an official press release:

We’re happy that he’s moving on to some extremely epic things, including a sojourn to Middle Earth. So in honor of Stephen Colbert’s big week, we present – for the first time online – the full-length 2021 Lord of the Rings Cast Reunions.

This series of chats came out of Alamo running the Peter Jackson-directed Lord of the Rings films in its locations in an era where repertory titles could keep the lights on. Added as extra material that helped turn each film into an event, it only made sense to draft Stephen Colbert’s super fandom into the mix. I mean, who else is an undisputed trivia champion who can answer anything Peter Jackson throws at him?

Of course, looking at the future of the Middle-earth Saga, past Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’s 2027 debut, these archival interviews serve another purpose. And it’s not just to draw attention in the shadow of one of late night’s most devastating cancellations.

Dominic Monaghan, Elijah Wood, Billy Boyd, and Sean Astin share a drink in the pub in The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.

One Of Stephen Colbert’s Post-Late Night Adventures Brings Him To Middle-earth

Alamo’s revival of these Middle-earth moments have come at the perfect time; and not just due to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s finale looming. As you may know, Mr. Colbert is co-writing a Lord of the Rings midquel that dives into un-adapted events from The Fellowship of the Ring

While Tom Bombadil’s involvement is still a question, there’s no debate over whether or not Stephen is up to the task. Showing off yet another source of this late night titan’s Lord of the Rings knowledge only helps reinforce that decision; similar to how Peter Jackson’s recent LOTR anniversary intros helped welcome these films back into theaters earlier this year.

Those with interest in this huge tip of the hat to Stephen Colbert’s legacy as an interviewer/nerd can now go to YouTube and see all three Lord of the Rings reunion specials! Also, don’t forget that you can catch (or relive) the bittersweet finale of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, on Paramount+.
