Britney Spears gets a biopic
Britney Spears’s brand new biopic found itself a writer. Universal is putting out a movie for the pop diva. Now, Liz Meriweather will pin the screenplay for this dive into 1 of the millennium’s biggest artists. John Chu directs this film along with producer Mark Platt. Check out what we know so far about the new Britney film.
She’s So Lucky, She’s A Star
Liz Meriweather Is the Britney Spears biopic coming soon. Universal is giving the pop star a massive stage. Director Jon M. Chu adapts “The Woman in Me” to show fans a little more of what’s hiding behind the curtain. Britney Spears has enjoyed a lot of the spotlight in recent years.
A couple of different documentary efforts have tried to wrestle with the complicated media environment that Britney came up in. The late 90s and early 2000s were notoriously hard on a number of women performers. Especially in popular music.
Meriwether brings some unique perspective to the task of telling the story of an iconic artist. Variety’s report shines a spotlight on that experience. Fans might have seen her work on New Girl. She also helped create Dying for Sex. So, there’s a lot of room for optimism around this new hire!

What’s The Deal With This Biopic
The current obsession with big Hollywood biopics is an interesting one to dissect. Telling the story of a pop star like Britney Spears is really a number brainer. Especially, when you take into account the multiple truckloads of money that Lionsgate earned with Michael earlier this year. And to be sure, while not the king of pop, Spears has an argument as the Queen of pop.
The industry headwinds started changing a couple of years ago when release of Bob Marley: one Love won the box office over Valentine’s Day weekend comment ever since there’s been an appetite for these kinds of biopic features. Each successive year has brought yet another big Hollywood name portraying a star from the recent past
Two years ago, the pop star shared excitement about the new project being announced on social media. She posted a short statement in support of producer Mark Platt.
Excited to share with my fans that I’ve been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He’s always made my favorite movies … stay tuned – Spears
In addition, there’s really no argument against swinging for the fences like this. John Chu made universal almost as big of a truckload of money as Michael with Wicked Part 1 and Part 2 in recent years. He’s clearly a favorite of the studio. And, he crafted legitimate event films that got people into the theater. Look for the same to happen here with Britney.
