In Waves tells a powerful story
Netflix’s latest animated project In Waves just dropped a trailer. And, the clip is incredibly moving. Get ready to meet AJ and Kristen, two kids from Southern California who bond over the sport of surfing. In Waves is downright gorgeous to look at. And, that beauty masks an emotional tale that will take viewers on their own journey.
AJ is voiced by Will Sharpe and Kristen is played by Stephanie Hsu. THeir vocal performances bring this tale of first love to life. In Waves is tender and contemplative about life and the currents that pull us into the future. This story is about grief and how to make it through to the others side. Bringing this beautiful story to life
Director Phuong Mai Nguyen deserves a lot of credit for translating Dungo’s graphic novel into this dreamlike movie. She spoke to Netflix’s TUDUM about managing the tone of such an emotional story. It’s not easy to capture the sparks of first love against heavier emotions. But, the filmmaker displays a deft hand that packs a real punch.
“I wanted to make a film that highlights the tenderness and the resilience in this couple and their group of friends,” Nguyen said. “I wanted the film to convey, through the characters, an urgency to live and to believe in the future.”

Talking to AJ himself!
A lot of time has passed since the days chasing waves with Kristen on these beaches. But, AJ Dungo remembers it all fondly now. Even the hard parts. He told TUDUM about getting to see Nguyen render his story on the big screen. There was a lot of comfort in seeing what choices the director made.
“For a film about something devastating, there is so much life and humor to be found in the performances, the physical comedy, the timing. I found myself laughing as much as I was crying,” Dungo says.
