‘The Transformers: The Movie’ Rolls Out Back To Theaters For 40th Anniversary

Optimus Prime in Transformers The Movie.

When The Transformers: The Movie premiered in U.S. theaters all the way back in 1986, it was…divisive, to say the least. What else do you call it when you make a Transformers movie that permanently kills off the vast majority of the characters, Autobot and Decepticon alike? In particular, the death of Optimus Prime basically traumatized an entire generation, to the point of massive outcry from fans and even a letter-writing campaign. All of which contributed to that 1986 movie turning into a bomb that failed in theaters…only for it to become a cult classic over the years precisely due to how dark it was. Despite this, or maybe because of it, Hasbro are keen to market that old film to its full potential. How else do you explain this story for today?

Fathom Entertainment and Hasbro are proud to announce that The Transformers: The Movie is returning to U.S. theaters. All to celebrate the 40th anniversary of that very much traumatic Transformers movie, and to apparently traumatize a new generation of fans. The screenings will all be in glorious 4K resolution, and all will start showing in theaters starting on September 17, 2026 in honor of Transformers Day and ending in September 21, 2026.

Curious about how you can get tickets for this The Transformers: The Movie screening? Well, the actual tickets will be available sometime in Summer 2026. You can sign up for announcements on when you can purchase them directly from Fathom’s official website.
