Weekend Box Office: Clayface Opens With $24 Million

Well, we have a new number one at the box office, and this time it’s a comic book character taking the top spot. Clayface opened with $24 million, giving it a first-place finish and landing just below my previous prediction of $28 million. That’s a reasonably close result, especially considering the tracking range was $23 million to $33 million. I was a little optimistic, but at least I didn’t completely miss the mark.

Meanwhile, You Can See Everything continued its impressive run with $19.5 million, improving on last weekend’s $15 million after expanding into wide release. Wildwood opened with $11.6 million, followed by Street Fighter with $8.6 million and Wicker with $5.8 million. It’s an interesting weekend where the new release took first place, but the holdovers are still finding ways to keep audiences interested.

Clayface Takes First Place

Clayface opened with $24 million, taking the number one spot at the weekend box office. My prediction was $28 million, based on tracking between $23 million and $33 million. That puts the actual result just $4 million below my estimate, while still landing comfortably within the expected range.

The character has an established connection to the Batman universe, even if Clayface isn’t exactly a household name on the level of the Dark Knight himself. That familiarity appears to have been enough to bring audiences in for opening weekend. The next question is whether the film can maintain its momentum as the initial comic book audience gets through the doors.

I’m happy with this prediction. It wasn’t an exact hit, but getting within $4 million of the actual opening is a pretty good result. Considering how unpredictable box office tracking can be, I’ll take it.

You Can See Everything Keeps Climbing

You Can See Everything

You Can See Everything brought in another $19.5 million, finishing second and continuing its strong performance after expanding into wide release. Last weekend, the film earned $15 million, meaning it actually increased its weekend business rather than experiencing the usual drop that comes with a wider theatrical rollout.

That’s an encouraging result for a film that was already showing signs of finding a larger audience. Instead of simply benefiting from the initial expansion, it appears to be building momentum. The question now is how long it can continue holding onto that audience, especially with more competition coming into theatres.

Wildwood Opens in Third

Wildwood opened with $11.6 million, landing in third place for the weekend. It wasn’t enough to challenge Clayface or You Can See Everything for the top spot, but it still managed to secure a respectable position in the chart.

With several films competing for attention, the challenge for Wildwood will be maintaining its audience over the next few weekends. A strong opening can get a movie noticed, but the second weekend is where we start finding out whether people are actually recommending it to their friends or simply moving on to the next release.

Street Fighter Drops to Fourth

Street Fighter earned $8.6 million, finishing in fourth place. After opening with $31 million last weekend, the film has taken a fairly substantial step down, although it remains in the top five.

My opening weekend prediction was $35 million, with tracking suggesting a range of $25 million to $40 million. The actual $31 million opening landed within that range and just $4 million below my estimate. So far, that prediction has held up pretty well, even if the film is now starting to face the usual competition from newer releases.

Wicker Rounds Out the Top Five

Wicker rounded out the top five with $5.8 million. It was a quieter result compared with the top three, but enough to keep it in the weekend’s leading films.

With Clayface taking first place and You Can See Everything continuing to climb, the lower half of the chart was a little less dramatic. Still, getting into the top five is a decent accomplishment when audiences have plenty of options competing for their attention.

Next Weekend’s Predictions

Looking ahead, there aren’t many major releases next weekend that I expect to crack the top five. It looks like we could have a relatively quiet box office, with the current films having a chance to hold onto their positions rather than immediately getting pushed aside by another massive opening.

That doesn’t mean there isn’t something worth keeping an eye on, though. Sight & Sound Presents: JOSHUA Live! is one release that could potentially surprise us. Faith-based movies have a way of quietly finding an audience and doing better than people expect, especially when they connect with a dedicated audience that turns out to support them.

It’s the kind of release that may not necessarily show up as a major contender in the early tracking, but could still find its audience if the audience response is there. We’ve seen faith-based films demonstrate that theatrical performance isn’t always about having the biggest marketing campaign or the most recognizable stars. Sometimes a movie simply has an audience that is ready to show up.

For now, I’m expecting a quieter weekend overall, but I’m not going to completely dismiss JOSHUA Live!. If there’s one thing the box office has taught us, it’s that the films we aren’t paying much attention to can occasionally be the ones that make the biggest surprise.

As always, we’ll find out next week.
