Zombies. Why did it have to be zombies? As a person who is deathly afraid of zombies, ha nice pun, I also seem to love reading about them. That’s how I came across Crawlerz by R.I. Merritt. It’s free on kindle unlimited and so I thought I’d give it a try.
The Meat of the Story
The story begins with an archeological expedition in Egypt. An old ancient tunnel is discovered under a pyramid that once it is open, unleashes an undead force upon the world. It then cuts to a family of 5. An older couple and their 3 adopted teens. As in any zombie movie or book, the dad turns out to be ex Special Forces turned cop, so we’ve got the military Intel down. We see from their point of view how the infection spreads slowly all over the world.
The faster the better
The zombies in this book are like the zombies in 28 Days Later. They get a surge of adrenaline that makes them super fast with superior strength. After the initial surge of adrenaline, if they survive, they become Crawlerz as the book title suggests. These crawlerz only come out at night but they are even stronger and faster than in the first stage. They can sense human life and go after it relentlessly until the sun comes up and they hide away from the sun. Oh and did I mention they don’t die out? As in we can’t wait for them to starve because apparently the ones inside the tunnel were THOUSANDS OF YEARS OLD, so there goes that plan.
Life Imitating Art
I personally loved this book. Since this is a 5 book series, I am invested as to what will happen to the characters. I won’t give away too much but suffice to say you do get drawn into the family’s wellbeing and want to see if they survive. The book came out in September 2020 so there is a lot of social commentary in there. Much of how the spread happened mimics how the virus we are dealing with happened sans the zombie thing. Overall I would definitely recommend this as a good read because come on who doesn’t like ancient zombies?
At the Edge of Your Seat
I will say that it this book is filled with lots of tension. We have humanity falling apart sadly by its own doing. People turning on people instead of banding together . You also have a very detailed telling of how our protagonist are continously threatened. There were times I had to put the book down and catch my breath when the tension was just too high. Stay tuned for my review on part two.
