Fans of Happy Death Day have been waiting patiently for the third film in the series for quite a while now. With a slow trickle of news or hope over the years, it looks like we’ve got an actual concrete update on the film from its star, Jessica Rothe. She sat down with Deadline for an interview about her upcoming film River and the conversation came to Happy Death Day 3. We previously had an update from her at a Beyond Fest screening of both the first and second films, where she confirmed that work was being done on the film.
Now it looks like Christopher Landon and Rothe are just waiting on Universal and Blumhouse to greenlight the project and give it a budget.
“So, Chris Landon and I have actually broken the whole story, which was really fun,” Rothe reveals. “We went to an undisclosed location—a Le Pain Quotidien in between our houses—and sat there for hours and broke the third movie. And now, we’re just waiting for Universal and Blumhouse to [give us] just a little money. This is a Deadline exclusive. You heard it here first.”
If you haven’t seen Happy Death Day, the story is incredibly simple. Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) is murdered on her birthday, only to wake up the next day, and she dies over and over again until she can figure out how to stop it. So yes, the film is Groundhog Day mixed with a slasher. The inventive and creative film written by Scott Lobdell and directed by Christopher Landon, took the box office by storm, grossing $125 million worldwide and spawned a sequel that leaned more into sci-fi aspects, that released in 2019.
Jessica Rothe Is Up To A Lot Of Horror Lately
Jessica Rothe isn’t just up to Happy Death Day, she’s also got a couple of horror movies in the pipeline, including River, which just recently premiered at TIFF and Beware Boiúna, which is making its debut at Fantastic Fest. River follows three siblings who, after being stranded in a boat on a country river, are stalked by a faceless killer. Beware Boiúna is about a team of doctors embark on a local mission in the Amazon rainforest, but it soon becomes clear that not everybody – or everything – is happy to see them. Their sudden appearance draws the attention of an animal predator, the “Boiúna.”
