Kaylee Hottle, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Star, Dead At 19

It’s never easy to acknowledge the subject of death, and even more difficult when that topic involves the sudden passing of someone far too young. The news of Godzilla vs. Kong star Kaylee Hottle’s tragic death is one such occasion, as the Deaf actor notable for her time in the MonsterVerse is sadly no longer with us.

In Memoriam: Kaylee Hottle (2007 – 2026)

This unfortunate news comes via TMZ, as the gossip site has spoken directly with Kaylee’s father, Joshua Hottle. The cause of death was a car accident, which occurred early this morning in Maryland. At the time of this writing, there are no further details involving said accident;

In both his statement with the source, as well as a social media livestream, Mr. Hottle shared that shortly after he was notified of his daughter’s accident, she was confirmed to be dead – due to her heart stopping in the ambulance. Joshua’s comments also noted that he was flying from Texas to claim Kaylee Hottle’s body.

Understandably, the Facebook livestream where Mr. Hottle broke the news was titled, “I am taking a flight that I never would like to take.” For anyone who’s a parent, or even the relative and friend of someone as young as Kaylee, that sentiment is an understatement. Especially when the Atlanta-born MonsterVerse actor leaves behind both a life, and a career, that was still on the rise. 

How Godzilla vs. Kong Started Kaylee Hottle’s Acting Career

Like most young actors, Kaylee Hottle started her career with commercial work. Around the age of 10, the eventual Godzilla vs. Kong cast member was doing ads and informational content that highlighted the Deaf community, According to Hottle, in a 2024 interview with Chron, an ad for the video relay service Convo eventually caught the eye of Kong: Skull Island assistant director. 

That attention couldn’t have come at a better time, as the third Godzilla reboot film (fourth in the overall MonsterVerse) saw the character of Jia also being deaf. An ally to an older, more grizzled Kong, Kaylee Hottle’s role bridged the classic movie creature to the world of humanity, as well as a new audience that could fall in love with the (somewhat) gentle giant.

With the franchise brass looking for an actor who truly embodied the role, the casting for this native of Skull Island couldn’t be more important. When speaking of Hottle’s casting, producer Alex Garcia reinforced the story of how the young actor was cast (via Hollywood Life) thusly: 

Finding the right girl to play Jia was an incredible challenge. We had to look outside of the traditional casting channels to find her, and Kaylee, whom we were very fortunate to cast, had never been in a film before. But through a network of casting directors and theaters, our terrific casting director, Sarah Halley Finn, was able to locate her. And the moment we met Kaylee we knew she was the right girl for the part.

After her acting debut, Kaylee Hottle would go on to guest star in the Magnum P.I. reboot’s Season 4 episode “Texas Wedge.” Hottle would also return as Jia in 2024’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. According to her IMDB profile, she was in pre-production for another film at the time of her death.

Even with a limited amount of credits to her name, Kaylee Hottle’s talent was as undeniable as what her stardom meant for the advancement of Deaf representation.
