The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf [Review]

The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is an animated prequel that explores the origins of Vesemir. Who is Geralt’s mentor in The Witcher games and is set to appear in Season 2 of The Witcher live-action series.

The show explores Vesemir’s origins and sets up his role as a Witcher. As usual for this property, there are monsters on the prowl and Vesemir goes on the hunt, only to find a larger conspiracy at play.

The animation style works for this, and I enjoyed the looks of the various people and monsters. I had some reservations about the art style but when you see it in action, they really do use it to its full advantage.

Also, because this is Vesemir’s story, you’re really wanting to be invested in him as a character and you quickly are. He has a roguish charm but he has virtues and principles. By the end of the movie, I felt much more interested to see Vesemir in The Witcher Season 2. This is enhanced by a stellar vocal performance.

My biggest complaint is that it does feel like an incomplete story. There is a conclusion but this relies on you having seen The Witcher Season 1 and presumably watching Season 2 will feed off this. This felt like one piece in a larger story and if you’ve seen the first season or are going to watch future content it’s fine, but it feels like the film as a standalone movie has a lot more it could’ve done.

7/10
