Marvel Studios Announces Shawn Levy’s Ghost Rider Starring Ryan Gosling

Marvel has found its Ghost Rider. Ryan Gosling will officially play the supernatural Marvel hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, bringing one of the company’s most iconic characters into the next phase of the franchise.

The casting marks a major addition to the MCU and gives Marvel one of Hollywood’s biggest stars for the role. Gosling has built an impressive career across action, comedy, drama, and blockbuster filmmaking, making him an intriguing choice to take on Johnny Blaze and the Spirit of Vengeance.

Ryan Gosling Is Marvel’s New Ghost Rider

Marvel Studios announced at San Diego Comic-Con that Gosling will portray Ghost Rider in a film directed by Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine, Star Wars: Starfighter). Marvel Studios brings the character into its interconnected cinematic universe. The role allows the actor to put his own spin on one of Marvel’s darker and more supernatural heroes.

Ghost Rider has remained one of Marvel’s most popular characters since his debut in the comics. The character combines the mythology of a cursed soul with the visual spectacle of a flaming skull, supernatural powers, and a motorcycle that can become a weapon of vengeance.

Marvel previously brought Ghost Rider to the big screen with Nicolas Cage playing Johnny Blaze in two films released in 2007 and 2011. Gabriel Luna also portrayed Robbie Reyes, another version of Ghost Rider, on the television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The new incarnation will mark the character’s official arrival in the current MCU continuity.

A Major Addition to the MCU

Gosling’s casting gives Marvel another major Hollywood name as the studio continues to expand its roster of superheroes. The actor joins a franchise that has already featured some of the biggest stars in the world, from Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson to Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman.

Ryan Gosling Brings Plenty of Experience

Gosling has already proven that he can carry major blockbuster productions. His recent credits include Barbie, where he played Ken opposite Margot Robbie, and The Fall Guy, which allowed him to combine action with his comedic talents.

He also earned an Academy Award nomination for his performance in Barbie and previously received an Oscar nomination for La La Land. His filmography also includes action driven projects such as Blade Runner 2049 and The Gray Man, giving him plenty of experience with the kind of large scale productions that come with joining the MCU.

Gosling has also expressed interest in playing Ghost Rider in the past, making the casting feel like a long awaited match between actor and character. Now that Marvel has made the announcement official, fans can finally start imagining what the actor will do with the role.
