‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ Directors Confirm Hasbro Determined To Make Sequel

D&D fans will readily recall the recent Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie in 2023. After all, this particular D&D movie by directors and screenplay writers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley managed to become a hit with both critics and audiences, who praised the movie to the stars for, among other things, the performances, the story, and the humor. It’s certainly a far cry from the original D&D movie trilogy back in 2000, which apparently no one liked. And while that 2000 movie got sequels that no one asked for, that cannot be said for the 2023 movie. In fact, fans have been openly wondering if it will get a sequel ever since its theatrical debut. Fortunately, we now have something akin to confirmation on that.

In a recent interview with The Playlist News, directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are confident that Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will get a sequel. According to them, production company and rights holder Hasbro are “determined” to find a new studio home for that sequel. All while confirming that they have actually already written up the screenplay for that proposed sequel. Now all they need is a studio to actually make it, as well as the budget to afford it. Alas, that studio will not be Paramount, who is the production studio and distributor for the first movie. Apparently, the movie didn’t do as well as Paramount hoped it would, so they’ve abandoned any idea of working on that sequel entirely.

Yes, there are practical realities with the finance contingent, and who knows if it ever gets made, but we were proud of the sequel script and hope that at some point it does find a path.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Sequel Hopefully Finds Good Hands Soon?

Admittedly, Hasbro isn’t the greatest company in the world. Not by a long shot. But at the very least, it sounds like they smell a potential money-maker in a sequel to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Or at least, enough of a moneymaker that they’re still looking out for a studio willing to throw down cash to actually work on it.

It was quite unfortunate though that Paramount chose to abandon that sequel. Not even because of anything Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves did wrong. It quite simply just didn’t make enough money for Paramount’s satisfaction. The directors themselves blame three things for that: releasing the movie just four days before the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, some scumminess on the part of Wizards of the Coast at the time over changing their gaming license creating outrage among D&D fans, and a rather lacklustre marketing campaign. All of that contributed to a “perfect storm” that ultimately resulted in the movie not doing as well as Paramount hoped. Hence why they dropped all work on the sequel.

Alas, ultimately, all this bit of news does is confirm that the long-awaited sequel to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is not quite dead yet. However, it’s not quite alive yet either. All we can do now is wait for some studio to pick up that sequel and fund it, and that’s it. Hopefully, that time will come soon…ish.
