New ‘Deadpool’ Movie In Early Development According To Star Ryan Reynolds

Following the massive success of Deadpool & Wolverine, it wasn’t a matter of if we would see Ryan Reynolds suit up as the Merc With a Mouth again for a major motion picture. True Believers knew that it was only a matter of when. Now, the star has dropped some hints about the future of his delightfully vulgar Marvel character on the silver screen. 

While appearing at Fanatics Fest 2026 in New York City over the weekend, Reynolds shared during his panel that a new movie featuring Wade Wilson is currently in the works. He mentioned that there are currently some deep cuts from the comics that are missing from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly from Deadpool co-creator Fabian Nicieza and legendary comic book writer Gerry Duggan, so he hopes to bring some of those stories from the page to the screen very soon. 

The Marvel Studios star didn’t expand on any details, but he assured those in attendance that the upcoming projects will be great. Deadline notes that development is still in the extremely early stages since their sources stated that there are currently no writer or director attached at the time of this writing. Furthermore, neither the House of Mouse nor the House of Ideas had any comment on the film. However, with San Diego Comic Con and the D23 Expo on the horizon, that could change very soon. 

Dead Reckoning

Even before he officially joined the MCU with his third film, which became the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time by raking in $1.3 billion globally, Reynolds’ version of Deadpool became beloved among the Marvel fandom. Despite a less-than-stellar live-action debut in X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009, 20th Century Fox righted this massive wrong by spinning off the character into his own franchise with Deadpool in 2016 and Deadpool 2 in 2019.

Although, while appearing on Today’s Sunday Sitdown Live back in April, the actor shared that the character was likely to be a supporting character in future appearances. He didn’t exactly confirm rumors that he would pop up in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, which does prominently feature his Deadpool & Wolverine co-star Channing Tatum as Gambit in the highly-anticipated first trailer, but he did say at the time that Deadpool is “a guy that’s great in a group.” His latest comments don’t necessarily disregard his previous statements, but if they’re doing another Deadpool film, then Deadpool will likely be at the center of that story. 

Meanwhile, as we anxiously await further details of this new endeavor featuring the fan-favorite X-Men member, Reynolds is keeping busy with a number of projects. His appearance at Fanatics Fest coincided with Wrexham AFC’s summer tour of the United States. The football club co-owned by Reynolds and Rob Mac of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is scheduled to play a series of friendlies in the States to close out July. Additionally, his action comedy Mayday with Kenneth Branagh is scheduled to debut on Apple TV on September 4, 2026.
