Another win for the gays! Powerhouses Rebecca Ferguson and Greta Lee have officially teamed up to lead the upcoming romantic-comedy “Honeymoon / Funeral.” With filming already underway in London, the project is shaping up to be the high-profile, genuinely nuanced sapphic rom-com queer audiences have been begging Hollywood to deliver.
Financed and overseen by MRC, the film is helmed by director Nahnatchka Khan (Always Be My Maybe) with a script by Julia Bicknell (The Haunting of Bly Manor, Yellowjackets). It brings Ferguson and Lee together in a way that fans have been waiting for, especially when the film was announced as a rom-com without any indication over who was set to play what role.
Ferguson and Lee will play “two women who meet on a flight from LA to London – one en route to her honeymoon by herself after being left at the altar by her girlfriend, the other headed home for her mother’s funeral – and wind up spending the week together.” Photos from the set went viral earlier last month setting everyone off across social media.
The creative team behind the project have quite the track record of queer storytelling and sharp comedy. Bicknell’s writing background on sapphic fan-favorites like Bly Manor, paired with Khan’s direction of strong, modern romantic comedies, gives a peek into a film that understands both the emotional depth and lighthearted charm essential to the genre.
Produced by Jennifer Carreras and Khan under their Fierce Baby banner alongside Bicknell, “Honeymoon / Funeral” promises to be a fun step forward for sapphic and queer representation on the big screen. Lee and Ferguson are both strong actors with accolades to back them up making this project a must-see.
