20th Century Studios has released the final trailer for The Dog Stars, the latest feature from legendary filmmaker Ridley Scott. The post apocalyptic thriller arrives exclusively in theatres, IMAX, and premium large format screens on August 28. Additionally, the new trailer offers the most expansive look yet at the film’s gripping world, emotional stakes, and stellar cast.
A Journey Beyond Survival
Based on Peter Heller’s acclaimed bestselling novel, The Dog Stars tells the story of Hig, played by Jacob Elordi, a young pilot who has managed to survive the collapse of civilization. He does so alongside the hardened military survivalist Bangley, portrayed by Josh Brolin. The pair have carved out a fragile existence in an isolated airfield, where every day is focused on survival. However, when Hig intercepts a mysterious radio transmission that suggests other survivors may still be out there, he sets out on a dangerous journey. He searches for hope, purpose, and a reminder that humanity has not completely disappeared.
The latest trailer leans heavily into both the spectacle and emotion of the story. It features stunning aerial cinematography, haunting landscapes, and moments of explosive action. These are balanced by quieter scenes that explore loneliness, resilience, and the importance of human connection. Rather than focusing solely on survival, the footage suggests The Dog Stars is equally interested in what gives life meaning after the world has fallen apart.
An Outstanding Cast
Leading the film is Jacob Elordi, who has quickly become one of Hollywood’s most sought after young actors. This follows his acclaimed performances in Priscilla, Saltburn, and HBO’s Euphoria. Opposite him is Academy Award nominee Josh Brolin, known for memorable roles in No Country for Old Men, Dune, Sicario, and as Thanos in Marvel Studios’ Avengers films.
The supporting cast is equally impressive, featuring Margaret Qualley, whose recent work includes The Substance, Poor Things, and Maid. She stars alongside Academy Award winner Allison Janney, Marvel star Benedict Wong, and Academy Award winner Guy Pearce. With so many acclaimed performers sharing the screen, The Dog Stars looks poised to deliver compelling performances alongside its large scale action.
Ridley Scott Returns to Familiar Territory
Few directors are as synonymous with ambitious science fiction and epic filmmaking as Ridley Scott. Throughout his career, Scott has delivered classics including Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, The Martian, and Black Hawk Down. More recently, he has tackled historical epics with Napoleon. In addition, he returned to one of his most beloved franchises with Gladiator II. While The Dog Stars is set in a post apocalyptic world rather than deep space or ancient Rome, it appears to combine many of the themes that have defined Scott’s best work. These include survival, human perseverance, breathtaking visuals, and morally complex characters.
The screenplay comes from Mark L. Smith, whose previous writing credits include The Revenant, Twisters, and American Primeval. His experience crafting survival driven stories makes him a natural fit for adapting Peter Heller’s novel. Notably, the novel has long been praised for blending suspense with thoughtful character drama.
One of Summer’s Biggest Releases
The final trailer does an excellent job of teasing the film without revealing too much of its story. It highlights thrilling aerial sequences, tense confrontations, and gorgeous cinematography. At the same time, it maintains an air of mystery around Hig’s journey. Combined with Ridley Scott’s proven ability to create immersive worlds and an exceptional ensemble cast, The Dog Stars has all the ingredients of a memorable big screen experience.
Whether audiences are drawn in by Scott’s filmmaking, the acclaimed source material, or the impressive cast, The Dog Stars is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing theatrical releases of the late summer movie season. The film opens exclusively in theatres, IMAX, and premium large format screens on August 28th.
