Clash of The Thundermans pulls Kira Kosarin into new terriroty
With the new movie out in the world, I spoke to Kira Kosarin about all things Phoebe Thunderman. She and Max are being recognized for their contributions. But, the new movie does the best job of illustrating how far our duo have come since the show started on Nickelodeon. We discussed the ending of this movie, bringing the show back for more, lighting the fire for the next generation of heroes and more. On the more personal side, Kosarin was gracious and authentic speaking about the experience of being a producer now, rather than just an actor. We had to joke about her dynamic with Jack Griffo and how they’ve both grown as creators and producers in this series. Clearly, people love The Thundermans and you can watch how thoughtful Kosarin is for yourself down below!
A whole new environment for Phoebe
In The Thundermans universe, Kosarin has always had pole position. But, it’s been a while since this fan-favorite family soared onto Nickelodeon. Early in our interview, the actress actually clarified it for me. Kosarin nodded, “It’s been a minute. It’s actually been 14 years since we filmed the pilot. 13 since it started airing!” With that staggering knowledge in-tow, I had to ask about Phoebe’s journey through all of this.
“This is the most realistic and deep we’ve gone into conflict with the family. And, part of that is the format, right? In sitcom-land, everything has to be okay in 22 minutes,” Kosarin smiled. “There was the six episode ‘Summer of Secrets’ arc during Thundermans Undercover. We’ve had more extended arcs. But, this format really gave us the chance to let things really get funky before having everyone come back together.”
She continued, “It was really cool to explore that. And, the more dramatic side of things. But, very much keeping the family, keeping the comedy, keeping the silly. Because that is the heart of the show.”
As the Thundermans actress asked, “How do you make a multi-camera sitcom movie?” And, it turns out, she’s thought about it a ton as an executive producer! “Where do you give and where do you take and how do you make sure it flows seamlessly,” the producer mused. “The whole movie feels a little bit like an amusement park ride to me, right? You’ve got the ups and the downs and the twists and the Different energies throughout. So I’m glad that it felt right to you!”
