Universal Pictures is taking their talents back to 1985 with Miami Vice ’85. It’s coming from director Joseph Kosinski and now it looks like Walton Goggins has joined the cast of the film. He’s found a new villainous role in the film alongside Michael B. Jordan, Austin Butler, Whitney Peak, Alden Ehrenreich, Camila Morrone, John Leguizamo, and Danny Ramirez. Kosinski, who directed Top Gun: Maverick is joined by screenwriter Dan Gilroy. The new movie explores the glamor and corruption of 1980s Miami in an all-new version of Miami Vice, inspired by the pilot episode of that landmark series.
Miami Vice ’85 will be filmed for IMAX theaters and is set for release on May 19th, 2028. Production on the film should begin later this year.
As for Goggins’ role in the film, Deadline is reporting that he’s playing a henchman to Leguizamo’s main villain. The scheduling for the role had to be figured out due to Goggins’ starring role in Fallout and the third season of that show. A deal was struck to bring Goggins on board, with Kosinski wanting him specifically for this role.
The film is produced by Dylan Clark and Kosinski, with the script based on characters by Anthony Yerkovich from the original series which he executive produced with Michael Mann. Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier version of the screenplay.
What Else Has Walton Goggins Been Up To?
Goggins is currently in production on Season Three of Fallout from Kilter Films for Amazon. He also recently wrapped Mister, which was directed by Wade Eastwood and produced by Thunder Road Film for Amazon International. He’s also been in shows like Vice Principals, The Righteous Gemstones, and movies like Ant-Man and the Wasp, The Hateful Eight, and the upcoming Miami Vice ’85.
As for Miami Vice ’85, the film is pretty high up on my hype list. As a massive fan of the original TV series and the Michael Mann movie, this is a dream come true to have a director like Joseph Kosinski directing the film. Add to that, that the cast is about as top notch as it gets. Walton Goggins joining it only makes the movie that much better.
