Netflix nets another video game adaptation
It sounds like Donald Glover is ready for another round. The multi-hyphenate is writing and starring in a Player Unknown’s BattleGrounds series for Netflix. You can never really predict what projects will draw Glover in. But, with video games looking like a burgeoning frontier for entertainment right now, Netflix managed to get another fan-favorite creative into their orbit. Now, we all have to wait and see what kind of madness awaits!
Donald Glover writing a PUBG show
PUBG might not be as big as Fortnite. But, Fortnite doesn’t have Donald Glover writing a series about the game. The Hollywood Reporter dropped a piece today explaining how the Atlanta star got involved with the battle royale game. But, the most interesting part is probably how the man who brought us Childish Gambino is going to direct and star-in the project as well!
PUBG’s central conceit lies in the idea that about 100 players are tossed onto an island. Last one standing wins, and you’re allowed to do just about anything to keep yourself in the game. South Korean studio, Krafton, is highly intrigued by the idea of introducing their popular game to even more viewers on Netflix.

Netflix has been full-steam ahead with Gaming.
Remember, Netflix saw this wave turning a little while ago and thought to get ahead of the current. They have a live-action Assassin’s Creed show coming. (230 million units sold means there’s going to be an appetite for that!)
Devil May Cry is getting another season on the streamer. Fan-favorite voice actor Johnny Yong-Bosch voices Dante in that series. Fans of the games have embraced the 90s-flavored octane in the Netflix version of DMC.
And, Splinter Cell: Deathwatch brought Sam Fisher back into the limelight after the series went dormant for a while. The kind of espionage tactics on display there were easy to translate to a different set of screens too!
What’s next for Netflix’s gaming adaptations?
“Assassin’s Creed is a high-octane thriller centered on the secret war between two shadowy factions — one set on determining mankind’s future through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will. The series follows its characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity’s destiny.”
THS’s Take on the PUBG news
For a series devoted to mixing it up in the fray, it’s nice to see PUBG enter the arena here. Netflix’s established track record of adapting video games should help put fans at ease too. It’s curious to think about how Glover will choose to adapt PUBG. After all, the concept could go in a bunch of different dangerous ways.
It’s hard not think about the actor’s stint on Prime Video as a force behind Mr. & Mrs. Smith. That series drew some skepticism when it was announced. But, it tutrns out that unleashing popular creatives on a familiar concept can reap dividends. Even when the fans might not believe it’s a great idea to start out!
