Craig Gerber is back with more Sofia the First. But, this time a new generation of young viewers are learning what really makes us all royal! Time for a new journey with our beloved Disney Princess.

Sofia The First: Royal Magic is now streaming on Disney+, That Hollywood Show talked to Craig Gerber about bringing back a modern Disney favorite. Fans know Sofia at this point, but this series is for the younger viewers who didn’t go through the early days at Royal Prep. 

It was long enough ago now that some of the original Sofia kids have grown-up. It’s hard for some folks to believe. But, it’s true! Therefore, we can’t forget the past!

“It was tricky because there’s a lot of love for the original show. And a lot of people remember a lot of things about it,” Gerber told us. “So, you know, there’s gonna be no getting around like where’s her enchantlet? And what about the protectors? And what about the story Bookkeeper?”

“We really wanted to make it feel like a new experience for new viewers,” he added. “We didn’t want to have it where people started to feel like ‘I need to watch all the other movies in order to understand what’s going on…’”

While this may be a new version of Sofia the First, the core of this show still signs through. Royal Magic makes a point to meet the viewers where they are. Lessons are intuitive but not preaching at the viewer.

Some fans will find avenues to talk with their families about how to handle new situations when they encounter them in the world. That kind of entertainment is good for everyone.

“I think the thing that connects [the old show to the new one] is the underlying philosophy of what kind of show we’re making. The character of Sofia, what she represents, and the idea that we’re going into people’s homes and providing entertainment for children,” Gerber museded. “Giving them something that they can take away in their lives, and that’s useful for them, right? 

“Because, as they’re growing up and getting out into the world they’re gonna have disagreements with friends. They are going to have disappointments,” he explained. “They are going to be things that they try to do and they can’t do the first time. To be able to tell stories that are about empathy, compassion, and resilience.”
