While Friday may be the time we get a ton of Disney movie news, that doesn’t stop reports from dropping early.
Walt Disney Studios is developing a live-action adaptation of The Dallergut Dream Department Store based on the popular fantasy novel by South Korean author Miye Lee. Patrick Ness, who wrote the critical hit A Monster Calls, is adapting it.
What is The Dallergut Dream Department Store About?
The Dallergut Dream Department Store, which is the first book in a trilogy, follows a young woman named Penny who gets her dream job working at a multi-story department store in a hidden town where humans and animals shop for their nightly dreams. When strange, dangerous things begin to happen to the sleeping clientele, Penny must uncover the mystery before the nightmare spreads beyond the store.
The book became a massive #1 bestseller in South Korea, selling over a million copies before being translated into English and other languages. In America, it found commercial and critical success as part of the “healing fiction” and cozy fantasy trend, landing on the Indie Next List.
Patrick Ness has adapted two of his own books into feature films: the aforementioned A Monster Calls and Chaos Walking, which would star Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley. He also created the Doctor Who spinoff series Class. Ness has won the prestigious Carnegie Medal twice consecutively and writes deeply emotional, imaginative stories that frequently explore complex themes of grief, truth, and humanity, which makes him a perfect fit to adapt Lee’s novel.
I wouldn’t expect to hear anything about this during Disney’s D23 Expo this weekend, as the project is in very early development. That Hollywood Show will be on-site during Disney’s biannual event to bring you coverage all weekend long, so make sure you follow along.
