Gremlins 3 is bringing fans back into the world of the Mogwai after 36 years. Well, by the time we see it, it’ll be 38 years but the sentiment still remains. The film, which was originally set for a 2027 date, is now pushing back to October of 2028. Perfect for Halloween but sad for those of us who have been waiting for the Mogwai to return to the big screen after all these years.
The Gremlins franchise has been hit or miss at the box office. Gremlins was a success in 1984, earning $212 million worldwide earning over $200 million more than the original budget of the film. Gremlins 2: The New Batch, released in 1990, was less successful with a total of $41 million at the box office.
Since, the franchise has had two seasons of the show Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai release starting in 2023 so we have had some Gremlins in our lives since the 90s. But Gremlins 3 is going to be the big return for the franchise to theaters. Steven Spielberg is set to produce the film with one of the original screenwriters of Gremlins, Chris Columbus, producing and directing. Hannah Marks is writing the script. As of now, there is no news on casting.
“Few titles are as beloved and iconic as ‘Gremlins,’ and we’re beyond excited to bring it back for both lifelong fans and a whole new generation,” Warner Bros. Pictures’ president of development and production Jesse Ehrman said in a released statement when Gremlins 3 was first announced back in 2025. “It’s a privilege to be working alongside Steven [Spielberg], Chris [Columbus], and the entire creative team, and we look forward to audiences experiencing the next installment of the magic, mayhem and heart of Gremlins on the big screen in 2027.”
The teaser for the new release date features Gizmo looking adorable and peaking out of a backpack. But we all know that cuteness doesn’t always mean something you’d want to cuddle.
Now you can be reunited with Gizmo in 2028. Just don’t give a Mogwai any water. You don’t want that in your life.
