Take all of the following news with a grain of salt, but we might be getting a Sony “Spider-Man” Universe-set TV show based on the infamous and controversial Clone Saga story from Marvel Comics. According to Deadline, Prime Video is circling a deal to add another Spider-show to its roster.
Spider-Clones Getting the Green Light?
Proceed cautiously because there’s a lot of uncertainty around this unconfirmed bit of tea, plus Amazon MGM Studios and Sony TV aren’t commenting either way.
The almost-greenlit show, written by “American Born Chinese” creator Kelvin Yu, is supposed to be more focused on the second Clone Saga story arc, featuring two Spider-clones: Ben Reilly and Kaine Parker. There’s conflicting reports about what the story is actually about: either Ben and Kaine grappling with the discovery that they’re clones or have completely different origins altogether.
The Clone Saga storyline, in particular, was pretty controversial when it came out because it “revealed” that Ben was actually the original recipe Peter Parker, not the other way around. This shocking twist caused Peter to give up his mantle as Spider-Man and hand it over to Ben. Obviously, people who grew attached to Peter’s Spider-Man had meltdowns about this. If the show actually sees the light of day, it’ll be entertaining to see how modern fans handle this story if executed similarly.
Deadline’s sources were quick to caution that obviously the series won’t be a direct and complete adaptation of the infamous story; there will likely be changes and different interpretations, which is something Marvel excels at.
Amazon MGM-Sony Deal Still Chugging Along
This won’t be the first time we see Ben Reilly in live action or even the second time. He was the central focus of the recently cancelled, but highly rated “Spider-Noir” on Prime Video. So one Ben Reilly falls so another could rise? Was “Spider-Noir” sacrificed so the clones could thrive? Time will tell.
The series will mark another notch in the multi-title deal between Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television, the purpose of which is to grow the world of Spider-Man on streaming television. Amy Pascal, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller will likely also executive produce the Clone Saga series with Yu, as they pretty much oversee the entire Spider-Sony Universe.
