The Dark Knight is about to face one of his greatest challenges. DC, Warner Bros. Animation, and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment have announced the release dates for Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall. It is the first chapter in a new three-part animated movie event. This event is based on one of the most iconic storylines in Batman comic book history.
Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall will arrive on participating digital platforms across North America on August 25, 2026. It will come home on 4K UHD, Blu ray, and DVD on September 8. The second installment is scheduled to arrive later in 2026. Meanwhile, the third and final chapter is planned for early 2027.
Batman Faces His Most Dangerous Enemy
The first installment adapts the opening chapter of the legendary Batman: Knightfall comic book event. That event famously pushed Bruce Wayne to his physical and psychological limits. In the animated film, the mysterious powerhouse known as Bane frees Batman’s entire rogues gallery from Arkham Asylum. Thus he unleashes a wave of chaos across Gotham City.
With his enemies running loose and Bane orchestrating events from the shadows, Batman is forced into a battle of endurance unlike anything he has faced before. As a result, the story is particularly significant in Batman mythology because it explores what happens when even the Dark Knight reaches the point where he can no longer continue.
For longtime DC fans, Knightfall remains one of the most important Batman stories ever published. The storyline is perhaps best remembered for establishing Bane as one of Batman’s most formidable adversaries. It also dramatically changed the status quo surrounding the Caped Crusader.
Anson Mount and Michael Mando Lead the Cast
The animated film features an impressive voice cast led by Anson Mount as Bruce Wayne and Batman. Mount is best known for playing Captain Christopher Pike in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. He also played Black Bolt in Marvel’s Inhumans and the wider Marvel television universe.
Michael Mando takes on the role of Bane, bringing his experience playing intense and complicated characters to one of DC’s most physically imposing villains. Mando is perhaps best known for his acclaimed performance as Nacho Varga in Better Call Saul. He has also had roles in Orphan Black and the upcoming Spider Man: Brand New Day.
Pablo Schreiber rounds out the central cast as Jean Paul Valley, also known as Azrael. Schreiber has appeared in projects including American Gods, Orange Is the New Black, and the Halo television series. The character of Azrael will be particularly important to the larger Knightfall story. Therefore, his introduction is a significant part of the three film adaptation.
A Three Part Batman Event
Rather than attempting to compress the massive comic book storyline into a single feature, Warner Bros. Animation is adapting Batman: Knightfall as a three part movie event. This approach should give the filmmakers more room to explore the story’s sprawling cast of characters. It will also allow time for Batman’s relationship with his allies and the escalating threat posed by Bane.
The first film is directed by Jeff Wamester and written by Jeremy Adams. Rick Morales serves as Supervising Producer, with Jim Krieg and Kimberly S. Moreau serving as Producers. Sam Register and Michael Uslan are Executive Producers.

Rated R for strong bloody violence and running approximately 78 minutes, the animated feature appears to be embracing the darker tone of its source material. With Bane, Azrael, Batman, and the entire Arkham rogues gallery entering the story, Batman: Knightfall Part 1 could be the beginning of one of Warner Bros. Animation’s most ambitious DC adaptations yet.
The second chapter of the Batman: Knightfall trilogy is expected later in 2026, followed by Part 3 in early 2027. For Batman fans, the wait to see one of the Dark Knight’s most celebrated comic book sagas fully brought to life is almost over.
