Disney XD says game on for summer animation

That Hollywood Show sits down with Sylvain Dos Santos and Charles Lefebvre to talk Dragon Striker. Disney+ and Disney XD’s New animated series brings magical flair to the game of futball. Pairing lush, anime-influenced design, with a brilliant orchestral score, it’s game on for Dragon Striker

All 11 episodes premiere June 9 on Disney XD and the next day on Disney+.

Introducing the world of Dragon Striker

Dragon Striker lands on Disney+ next week, and we managed to speak with the creators of the next big Disney TV Animated hit. Key might be an underdog. But, his show certainly is not!

Sylvain Dos Santos (co-creator/executive producer), Charles Lefebvre (co-creator/director) and Paul McKeown (head writer) have teamed-up to craft a fantasy world that feels familiar. But, importantly, doesn’t feel derivative at all. Key and all his friends have distinct personalities. And, the art style is a huge reason for that.

“We have a lot of love from people who watch this,” Dos Santos began. “We have our very own fan club inside the studio… So far, it’s pretty unbelievable that everybody seems to like it!”

“You feel like the game has been there a long time. It’s been there before everybody. And, when you enter the world of Dragon Striker, the world is already fully-formed. We have a huge backstory for the continent. A lot of stuff, we thought about this before even telling the story. The same for the magic system. Personally linked to the characters, through their dreams and hopes.”

Balancing influences and original approaches

The topic of anime pretty quickly. The idea that all of these different experiences that creators have on the road to making a show like Dragon Striker would end up in the final product is obvious. But, for this team they knew this was a massive series and that level of care would only make a better final product.

“I’m a big video game player,” Lefebvre told us. “I am watching anime. I used to watch more, but where do you find the time? For the style and influence, for this type of project? It’s probably one in a lifetime. So with that opportunity, do you give it all or not?

“I decided to put everything I like, to display it in a way that feels good and engageing to the audiences,” he added. “To make sure everything feels stylish. Take all of that, it’s something that I am.”
