Robot Chicken Adult Swim Special: A Lovingly Animated Meet-Cute Between Courtroom Drama and Maritime Disaster

Robot Chicken, Adult Swim’s irreverent and long-running stop-motion sketch show created by Seth Green and Matthew Senrich, remains one of Adult Swim’s longest-running and most famous series. Who better to celebrate Adult Swim’s 25th anniversary? With Robot Chicken’s long history of turning myriad characters into frantic little stop-motion puppets for mile-a-minute, rapid-fire sketches, it’s perfect for them to be the ones honoring numerous shows and characters and bringing them inadvisably into one realm.

Fan-favorite Robot Chicken characters like the Nerd, Robot Chicken itself, and Bitch Pudding are represented here. The bulk of the narrative, however, is a proper celebration of Adult Swim favorites down the years, including Morty (Rick and Morty), Harvey Birdman (Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law), Assy McGee (Assy McGee), Mike Tyson (Mike Tyson Mysteries), Master Shake, Frylock, and Meatwad (Aqua Teen Hunger Force), Mr. Pickles (Mr. Pickles), Chris Monsanto (Eagleheart), and Nathan Explosion and the Dethklok crew (Metalocalypse), among others.

Robot Chicken Reminds Us What We Love About Adult Swim

One of Robot Chicken‘s greatest strengths is playing fast and loose with narrative for comedic purposes, so trying to pin down a ‘plot’ somewhat misses the point, but here goes. In the Robot Chicken Adult Swim Special, a cruise packed with Adult Swim notables launches in celebration of Adult Swim’s 25th. Disaster strikes, and it’s up to Harvey Birdman to prove the identity of the guilty party in a court of animated law. It’s a pleasant and cheeky setup that allows the Stoopid Buddy Studios crew to incorporate dozens of characters, a maritime tragedy, and a courtroom drama (sort of) into the same brief runtime.

The animation itself is typical of the studio’s work: frantic, intentionally imperfect, a little wild, and consistently funny. Their translation of traditionally 2D characters into their house style works well, and even improves upon the comedic impact of specific characters. The Aqua Teen Hunger Force crew are even funnier than usual, for example, and Assy McGee has never been better than it is in three dimensions. Additionally, the at-sea and courtroom elements allow some charming locales and situations that look great for small but detailed 3-dimensional sets. It’s all charming work, and it makes for a breezy time.

A Strong Special Backed By A Deep, Talented Cast

The special’s voice actors are a proper murderer’s row of talent. Between Robot Chicken’s frequent returning figures, other series’ original voice cast giving life to their famed characters, and live-action stars like Tim Heidecker, Eric André, and Joe Pera voicing themselves (well, action figure versions thereof). While that’s par for the course here (I mean, they’ve gotten Roddy Piper, Jordan Peele, Emma Stone, George R.R. Martin, Patrick Stewart, RZA, and George Lucas), it’s nice to hear the authenticity behind these characters.

The biggest weakness behind the special is that, by Robot Chicken standards, it could have a heavier dose of humor. While Chicken is at its best when it’s unexpected, it often successfully finds random moments within more focused narratives (think of Batman discovering Superman’s ‘I lost my powers for you’ ploy or the Schlorp, not Smurf, massacre of the Bitch Pudding special). This special has a slower pace and more streamlined story than your average Robot Chicken special. There are still many hilarious bits. For example, Mike Tyson giving underwater fisticuffs to Poseidon or anything Chris Elliot does. But it suffers from the decreased rate and too-focused tale.

All the same, it’s a fine special that brings together many Adult Swim favorites under the same animated roof, which is delightful. Swim is home to some of the best and least appropriate series in history (drop what you’re doing and watch The Shivering Truth now), and they’ve all been translated here in accurate portrayals and blended well into this narrative. It doesn’t have the maximum hyper-humor that the show is routinely known for, but it’s still a top-notch celebration of these unconventional series and a welcome display of the talent behind a Robot Chicken outing.
