“Little Red Riding Hood” is one of the most well-known fairy tales in the world. The story of a young girl wearing a red hood being attacked by a wolf masquerading as her grandma (somehow) is one of the most beloved of the Grimm Brothers’ tales. As you might imagine then, this fame and popularity (as well as the lack of copyright law around the story) has resulted in numerous adaptations around the world.
One particular adaptation is a series of novels by Aito Aoyagi titled Akazukin, Tabi no Tochū de Shitai to Deau, which translates to Little Red Riding Hood Encounters a Corpse on Her Journey. As you can imagine, these are a series of fantasy comedy mystery novels that star the eponymous Red Riding Hood as a detective trying to solve a murder. Apparently, this particular adaptation is popular enough that it received a live-action adaptation on Netflix titled Once upon a Crime back in 2023. Now though, we have an actual anime to look forward to.
Pony Canyon is proud to unveil the official anime adaptation of Akazukin, Tabi no Tochū de Shitai to Deau, now titled Red Riding Hood: A Detective Story. This will be an upcoming anime adaptation of those novels by Aito Aoyagi, featuring Benten Film (Forest of Piano, Hulaing Babies, The Yakuza’s Guide to Babysitting) as the animation studio behind it. As part of this announcement, they also have an official teaser trailer for us. Said trailer also reveals that we’ll get to see this anime sometime in 2027. Story:

Strangely enough, however, she kept getting swept up in incident after incident along the way.

Red Riding Hood: A Detective Story Getting Anime Sometime in 2027
Honestly, this is the first I’ve heard of this story. However, the basic premise of “Little Red Riding Hood” as a murder mystery story is quite a fascinating one. Especially since this anime seems to not only feature that particular fairy tale, but Aito Aoyagi also mixes it up with The Adventures of Pinocchio as well. It’s even more fascinating in the context of the Netflix adaptation, since that one mixes it up with Cinderella instead. Are we potentially looking at these different plots as different arcs for the anime? Or did the Netflix adaptation cut out parts of the story in order to fit them into a single movie?
Either way, we’ll only know for certain once we get to actually see Red Riding Hood: A Detective Story in the anime flesh. Unfortunately, 2027 is an incredibly broad release schedule. It could be anything from January 2027 to December 2027. Hopefully, since they announced this anime this early, maybe we’ll get to see it in the first half of 2027 rather than the latter half? Well, we can only dream for now.
