When Helluva Boss season 3 premiered, it immediately put its foot on the gas and whipped viewers right into a chaotic, emotionally-charged season. With so much left unresolved from the devastating ending of season 2 that found Goetia Prince Stolas (Bryce Pinkham) stripped of his powers and title and separated from his daughter Octavia (Barrett Wilbert Reed), it only made sense that season 3 would deliver what has been building up.
From the Wrath Wring to Judge Jiner’s sensationalist television courtroom, Helluva Boss reminds viewers why they fell in love with this show in the first place. Its frenzied pace has returned full-force, with the episodes deftly balancing the more light-hearted moments fans knew from the beginning with the emotionally charged heavier plot points it has gradually begun to flesh out over the seasons.
Stolas and Blitzø Navigate New Facets of Their Relationship
Season 3 has found Blitzø (Brandon Rogers) struggling to balance his feelings for Stolas while also trying to let him figure out what it is that he wants. Meanwhile, Stolas’s childhood crush Vassago (Harvey Guillén) has reentered his life and rekindled the romance that Stolas would not let himself have before. Episode 7 confirms that they are actively dating now, but not much else is given.
Blitzø, of course, is handling it about the best he can, which is not really well at all. Episode 6 sees him and his childhood friend Fizzarolli (Alex Brightman) taking a trip to the now-defunct Loo Loo Land where Fizz used to work. Episode 6 feels like the most ambitious
— and, frankly, scary
— episode of the season so far as the two battle it out with a deranged robo-Fizz that has been skinning imps around the city. The end of the episode sees Blitzø taking the robo-Fizz’s head back to I.M.P. headquarters to use as his “unhealthy coping mechanism.”
Throughout the last episodes, Blitzø is still having to actively work to accept that Stolas is so enamored with somebody else. Though he is no longer taking it out on Stolas directly, viewers can see the moments of struggle to keep an even head, especially when Vassago is mentioned. However, a quietly sweet moment on the fire escape while Blitzø is smoking a cigarette alone shows that he really is trying, as he reminds himself to say “good for him.”
Stolas and Octavia Reunite
After a season of Stolas lamenting the icy distance between him and his daughter, we finally see the two meet up for the first time since she officially pushed him out of her life. With her 18th birthday approaching, she needs to be mentored for her magic, which was something Stolas had been excited to do. However, without his magic he is unable to. That is where Vassago steps in, offering to mentor her himself.
Vassago possesses the ease that Stolas used to carry; that, along with his charm, has him facilitating the meeting that Stolas has been so desperately needing. While taking Via through the museum of magic and spells, her lesson also doubles as her chance to reunite and reconnect with her father. The resulting ballad, “What Went Wrong,” is a gorgeous tale of what separated them, and also what brought them back together again.
Some fans are already speculating about Vassago’s true intentions, leaving a theory to go around about what this mentoring session truly was. With the rest of the season returning in 2027, fans will have to wonder whether this reunion will stick, or if darker forces are at play for a Via that not only looks so very different from when we last saw her, but also once who let go of her anger so easily.
Barbie Returns, Along With a Vengeful Striker
It’s been some time since we have seen Blitzø’s twin sister Barbie (Jinhee Joung). She first appears in episode 6, when Fizz calls her asking to hang out. It is also in this moment that he asks her to give Blitzø another chance, which is what seemingly happens in episode 7. Indeed, she does show up at I.M.P. However, Barbie’s actions are more financially motivated, as she is unable to get another assassin job after letting a human die during her last mission.
So, she takes on a mission with Blitzø, despite Blitzø’s warnings that she doesn’t know or understand the human world the way that he does. As a result, the mission quickly goes sideways, which is furthered when Striker (Edward Bosco) shows up. While she is fighting gun-toting hillbillies, Striker looks to be putting Blitzø in a watery grave as he attempts to start an imp uprising.
Fortunately, Barbie is able to disarm Striker, but the ending finds her striking up a partnership with him instead of her brother. Though his and Fizz’s reunion was successful, she reminds him, theirs won’t be, as she blames him for everything that happened in their lives. Part 2 will surely show us where this pair will be, and it probably will not look good for I.M.P.
Is Roo Making an Appearance in Helluva Boss?
A moment fans will have noticed in episode 6 is the appearance of the fabled Roo, which so far has only appeared in Hazbin Hotel. Creator Vivienne Medrano has teased a crossover between the shows, so this could be our first glimpse at what that crossover could mean. Roo has been seen watching the sinners of Pride, so if she is watching I.M.P. as well, what plans could she have for Hell as a whole?
While part 1 of season 3 appears to end on a calmer note, there is a reason that calm comes before the storm. All of the plot threads introduced so far will need some tidying up before the season can truly end. But if there is (hopefully) one good thing to be taken from these episodes, it’s that at least Millie (Vivian Nixon Williams) and Moxxie (Richard Horvitz) are neck-deep in baby planning. Please let them make it out of this season unscathed.
