Resident Evil has, for decades, been one of the most beloved horror franchises out there. Needless to say, whey we first learned that it, like many other franchise, would experience a “reinvention,” we were, of course, skeptical. Based on the trailer that just dropped for Comic-Con International (SDCC 2026) however, well…. Let’s just say that we’ve tempered our skepticism. A lot. You can check the trailer out below.
Here’s what we know from the studio thus far:
From the mind of visionary filmmaker Zach Cregger (Weapons, Barbarian) comes a thrilling — and terrifying — reinvention of the Resident Evil franchise. In an all-new story, Resident Evil follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself in an action-packed, non-stop race for survival as one fateful, horrifying night collapses around him in chaos.
Resident Evil (re)invents new levels of fear
Fans looking for familiar characters from the prior films and namesake game series may be in for a surprise. Yes, we see quite a bit in the trailer that elicits fond memories of the series’ gameplay, Notwithstanding, the new Resident Evil film will be more of a side-quest with new characters. Austin Adams, best known for Euphoria and Weapons, brings a certain new charm to the franchise we’ve perhaps not seen before.
For Zach Cregger’s part, Resident Evil is sure to bring what is rapidly becoming his heart-stopping, recognizable style to the modern horror genre. Though not yet rated, I’m sure we can guess what rating the Motion Picture Association will slap on the film. From Columbia Pictures and Constantin Film, in association with TriStar Pictures, Resident Evil hits theatres September 18, 2026.
