It Ends opened in limited theaters over the weekend but hits general audiences across the country on August 28th. I had the chance to sit down with the writer/director of the film, Alex Ullom. Our conversation centered on some of the choices of the film, including the setting, the car used in the film, the music, and even some of the narrative choices. It was enlightening to hear about the making of this film and just what went into the writing process for Alex.

Just Don’t Ask Where They Filmed It Ends And Ruin It For Everyone Else
One thing that stuck out, besides the fact that Alex was so open about the filmmaking process, was that the studio doesn’t want people to know where they filmed the movie. That’s not just to keep up the mystery and intrigue of the long road to forever, its to protect that area in our real world. Stupid people might go out and try to ruin the beauty of it for everyone else. That’s really what stuck out to me. Sure, the film is haunting and makes it so that this beautiful place is a prison of sorts, but that beauty is what drives the film along.
We get the liminal space of the road but also the liminal space of the 90s-era car that’s in the film. Here’s what I had to say about It Ends in my review.
Depending on your interpretation of the ending of the film, It Ends could be seen as a satisfying movie. Either way, the film, good or bad, will make you think. There’s certainly a lot to think about leaving the film. Filmmaker Alex Ullom and his crew craft a story that has meaning depending on where you’re looking. This is kind of a double liminal space, with one being the car, and the other being the outside. If you think of it like the road is just your life, the message here is simple: love those who love you and keep them close.
