Alden Ehrenreich is heading back to 1985 with his next project. Deadline is reporting that the actor has joined Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in the Joseph Kosinski-directed take on the 1980s series, Miami Vice ’85. The film comes from Universal Pictures and is based on the classic 1980s series created by Michael Mann.
Miami Vice ’85 Details
The film looks to take on the glamour and corruption of 1980s Miami in an all-new version of the series on the big screen. The movie is inspired by the pilot episode of the show, one that’s tremendously influential on all aspects of TV today. The original show was a cultural juggernaut, influencing pop culture for years with pastel colors and its soundtrack. Miami Vice ’85 will be filmed for IMAX and is set for release by Universal Pictures on May 19th, 2028. Production should begin before the year ends.
The script for the movie comes from Dan Gilroy and is based on the characters created by Anthony Yerkovich. Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier draft of the screenplay. Exec Vice President of Production Development Sara Scott and Creative Executive of Production Development Christina Hoffrogge will oversee the project for the studio.
What About Alden Ehrenreich?
As of right now, his role is under wraps. Austin Butler and Michael B. Jordan are playing Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs respectively from the original series. The pilot episode focused on the budding relationship between those two and their hunt for Calderon, a kingpin who had Tubbs’ brother killed. We’ll have to see if they change any of the details from the original pilot of the show for the movie.
Alden Ehrenreich is known for roles in Weapons, Cocaine Bear, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and he recently won a Tony award for his performance in the play Becky Shaw. That role made his star even brighter and he personally chose to join Miami Vice ’85 over other roles that were offered to him.
He’s also starring in the upcoming films A Talent For Murder and The Last Resort with Daisy Ridley.
