‘Miami Vice ’85’ – New Joseph Kosinski-Led Reboot Confirms Stars

It’s long been rumored and basically confirmed, but now we have actual confirmation on the upcoming Miami Vice reboot from Joseph Kosinski. The film stars Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler and will now be called Miami Vice ’85. The Universal flim from the F1 and Top Gun: Maverick director is scheduled for release on August 6th, 2027. Production on the film should start later this year. And yes, like those other two movies, it’ll be shot for IMAX.

Michael B. Jordan will star as Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs and Austin Butler will star as James “Sonny” Crockett. Phillip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson played the characters in the original 1980s show from Michael Mann. In the Michael Mann-movie reboot from 2006, Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell played the characters.

The two stars have long been rumored and circling the project but now we have actual confirmation from Universal about the film. Michael B. Jordan is sure to be in demand after winning Best Actor at the Academy Awards for Sinners. Austin Butler has already been an in-demand actor after plenty of star-making performances over the past couple of years.

Here’s the logline of the film:

“Miami Vice ’85” will explore “the glamour and corruption of mid-80’s Miami” and is “inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking.”

Dan Gilroy wrote the script, which are based on characters from Anthony Yerkovich from the TV series, which was EP’ed by Yerkovich and Mann. An earlier draft of the screenplay was written by Eric Warren Singer.

Dylan Clark (for Dylan Clark Productions) and Kosinski serve as producers on the film. Executive VP of production development Sara Scott and creative executive of production development Christina Hoffrogge will oversee the project for the studio.
