There was once a time when it seemed that Warner Bros.’ shelving of Coyote vs. Acme was destined to become lost media. With the completed film turning into a 2023 tax write off, outraged Looney Tunes fans started a campaign to save the Will Forte/John Cena starring comedy from obscurity. Through the first trailer for this epic legal battle of wits, those prayers are answered – thanks to WB’s sale of the picture making that possible.
As someone who’s been waiting for Coyote vs. Acme’s publicity campaign to kick off, the past week or so has been a slow burn. In fact, you could say that Ketchup Entertainment’s marketing for this picture has been rather “taxing.” And if you ask me, the constant reminders of outgoing WB CEO David Zaslav’s decision to scrap this picture as a write off fit perfectly with the tone.

Sure, the actual story of Coyote vs. Acme is about a team of idealistic lawyers fighting a corporate monolith to expose shady business practices. But now that the public outroar will finally see Wile E. Coyote getting his cinematic day in court, real life’s looney nature has made the project even more relevant. That, as far as I’m concerned, is a greater sign of what to expect.
Coyote Vs. Acme’s Near Shelving Might Make This Movie Funnier
If I’m being completely honest, this trailer makes me happy for one huge reason: the movie looks phenomenal. Tons of old fashioned sight gags, easter eggs, property damage, cartoon physics, and – of course – John Cena heel action act as sign posts to everything a true fan would expect. All the while, the comparisons between Warner Bros. and the ACME Corporation are a sparkling fuse on this ticking tribute to the Looney Tunes brand.
Anyone who’s followed this brand’s ups and downs will tell you that Coyote vs. Acme’s unintentional fourth-wall breaking history is the sort of comedy fodder one would expect. Looney Tunes‘ landmark brand has always sent up current events and all things Hollywood with a song in its heart, and that energy runs through the entirety of this new trailer (and its constant ACME slander.)
Perhaps there’s justice for toons in this world after all; because who knows what Coyote vs. Acme’s theatrical release could lead to? Then again, that depends on who shows up at their local theater on August 28th, in the name of this once buried film.
