Dune has been Denis Villeneuve’s most breathtaking work. The visionary director has been bringing Frank Herbert’s franchise to life in three parts with the first two films being wildly successful. Now, as we prepare for the third installment, fans are awaiting the dark turn of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet).
As many have slowly learned through Herbert’s story, Paul is not a hero. Dune is, instead, a cautionary tale about charismatic men and their quest for power. It is why Dune: Part Three has been so exciting for fans. Adapting Herbert’s Dune Messiah, the story will clearly show the rise and fall of Paul and the latest trailer shows us just how far he is willing to go.
The cast includes Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Oscar nominee Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Isaach de Bankolé, with Oscar nominee Charlotte Rampling, with Anya Taylor-Joy, and Robert Pattinson, and Oscar winner Javier Bardem.
Dune: Part Three is described as follows: “Dune: Part Three is set nearly two decades after Paul Atreides seized control of the Imperium. Now a ruthless Emperor, Paul must face the consequences of his reign as old allies return, terrifying new threats emerge, and betrayal lurks in every shadow. Haunted by visions of Imperial collapse and the reappearance of his long-lost love, Paul is drawn into a sweeping conspiracy, with Chani at the heart of its unfolding mystery. As enemies close in, Paul must confront the true cost of power and the fate of those he loves the most.”

Love, loss, and Dune

At the end of Dune: Part Two, we saw Chani (Zendaya) and Paul at odds. Especially with Paul’s dedication to Princess Irulan (Pugh). Even though Chani and Paul still are together and even have children with each other in the world of Dune, it is a betrayal and shows Paul’s thirst for power over his love for Chani.
That is made very clear in this final trailer as Chani reveals that everything she did was for their children while Paul did it all for her. It is a selfish reveal and seeing how these two characters end up at odds with each other is going to be exciting. But even more than that, watching the fall of Muad’Dip is what fans of Herbert’s work have been waiting for. Paul is not our hero and Dune: Part Three is clearly not shying away from that.
Dune: Part Three hits theaters on December 18.
