More than a decade after its release, World War Z is getting a sequel from Paramount. The studio has closed a deal with Brad Pitt for his return to star in the film and has Edward Berger on board to direct as well. The original film released in theaters in 2013 and was based on the book World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks. Dennis Kelly will write the script for the sequel.
This marks a return for Pitt to the film that made $540 million at the worldwide box office, a high mark for a horror film in a time when horror wasn’t dominating like it does today. There are no plot details for the sequel and the first film didn’t necessarily follow the full events of the book. The book is written less like a narrative structure and more like a series of stories from the events of the zombie outbreak to humanity on the brink to them beating back the virus.
According to Deadline, who had the exciusive news, Pitt has wanted to do a sequel to the film for more than a decade. He wanted David Fincher to direct the film originally but Fincher dropped out after budgetary issues arose. Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg took over as the co-chairs of Paramount Pictures and saw a sequel to World War Z as a high priority.
What Brad Pitt And Paramount Are Up To
Brad Pitt and Paramount have Heart of the Beast coming out next weekend in theaters. It brings together Pitt back with David Ayer. Brad Pitt will also be in The Further Mid-Adventures of Cliff Booth later this year for Netflix, which is a sequel to Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood with Quentin Tarantino writing the film. Pitt won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for that role in 2019.
Pitt and Berger also worked together recently on The Riders for A24. That shoot was where Berger was convinced to sign on to direct the World War Z sequel.
