More haunting revolutionary earworms are on the way.
29 Tracks Packed With Talent
The tracklist for the companion album for “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” has been announced and it is 29 tracks filled with incredible talent, including cast members Jennifer Lawrence, Whitney Peak, Mckenna Grace, Stevie Nicks, Kacey Musgraves, The Cure, Noah Cyrus, The Smashing Pumpkins, and more. With the acts ranging from rock to Americana to country, the album promises a more melancholic vibe to supplement the film’s deceptive brightness.
Lawrence returns to bring a different rendition of the sweet lullaby, “Deep in the Meadow,” track no. 26 on the album. In previous films, Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen has sang the song to her little sister and her fellow competitor, as a way to offer them both peace. The song being placed towards the end of the album may signify a deeper connection to the story overall, which is focused on her mentor, Haymitch Abernathy.
On the Making of the Album
The album’s executive producer Dave Cobb chatted in an interview with Billboard about how all the different artists helped create a soundtrack that mirrored the sense of terror, wonder, awe, and fear that Haymitch feels and experiences. Among the many details he offered, one of the most endearing is the fact that some artists, like Noah Cyrus (“Ash and Snow”), chose to take inspiration directly from the characters themselves.
“The record has so many layers. It has triumph, sadness, and it has loss and it has love,” Cobb said. “I think that’s the way we looked at everything, songs that would fit every emotion that the movie has. Definitely, we talked to some of the artists about what we were looking for. Most of the artists, they loved the franchise already. They’d read the book. It was incredible to see how excited people were.”
For Cobb himself, the most exciting entry on the album was The Smashing Pumpkins’ “Black Stars,” saying that he was able to get the original team behind “Siamese Dream” back together for this. To him, that album defined the band.
Cobb’s previous works include “Elvis,” “A Star Is Born” (2018) and “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.”
