The Gilded Age is the hottest show in town. Especially for New York based actors. Filled with theatre performers, New York legends, and more, a lot of the cast of the hit HBO series has become the talk of the water coolers on Monday morning. That means that everyone wants to get an invite to Mrs. Reynolds’ house for a party. Like…two very unlikely extras that fans noticed in the Season 4 premiere episode of The Gilded Age.
A lot of the time when you’re watching a show, you don’t pay attention to the background actors. That’s not an insult to them, that’s just kind of the point. You don’t want to focus up on them when you could be watching the larger action happening. Hence why a lot of people were confused when they were watching The Gilded Age and had to do a double take when two very distinguished gentlemen were walking across the road.
In a very brief cameo appearance, both Matt Damon and David Letterman were featured walking in one shot of The Gilded Age and the rest is history. They don’t speak, they look like they are on a mission, and that’s the only time you see them in the episode. Damon is rocking a very full mustache and Letterman has his post-The Late Show with David Letterman beard and they’re both wearing hats. But even while in “disguise,” fans could still clock the two legends.

Being a background extra for the bit?
According to Deadline, their cameo is part of Letterman’s Netflix series My Next Guest Needs No Introduction and the details of their cameo will be explained there. But for now, it is just a hilarious bit of information that we all have. If anything, you’d think that a cameo like this would have at least gotten them a speaking role!
Letterman’s series is a talk show set up that allows Letterman and his guest to embark on field missions during their conversations. Meaning that this could easily just be Damon’s wish to be a background extra on a show. But given Letterman’s desire to be a walk on extra and Damon’s often readiness to do whatever for the bit, this situation was bound to happen. And now we have the joy of knowing that Letterman and Damon are part of the legacy of The Gilded Age. Now if only we could convince them to have a cameo every season…
