James Cameron’s Terminator 2 Is Heading Back To Theaters, And I Love His Added Context For Its Return

August 29, 1997 is a date all sci-fi fans can remember, as it’s the day Terminator 2: Judgement Day set as the opening salvo in Skynet’s war against humanity. Next summer marks the 30th anniversary of that red letter day, but there’s another very important anniversary for director James Cameron’s sequel that we need to celebrate.

That’s thanks to T2’s theatrical debut on July 3, 1991 – making for a 35th anniversary totally worth celebrating. Similar to Fathom Events’ anniversary reissue of The Lord of the Rings, the iconic adventures of Sarah and John Connor are coming back to the big screen. And sure enough, that news has inspired the Avatar helmer to provide another reason for Judgment Day’s theatrical return that actually sweetens the deal.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day Will Be Back…At A Theater Near You!

A new press release from Fathom Entertainment has staked out August 28th through September 2nd as the window for Terminator 2’s U.S. revival screenings. With tickets going on sale July 17th, public audiences will be able to see if those first reactions to The Odyssey carry any water, while securing a spot to an old favorite.

Before anyone asks, yes this is the same restoration that StudioCanal debuted in 2017. I mean, if moviegoers aren’t able to experience Robert Patrick’s T-1000 streaking towards them in 4K and 3D, what are we even doing here? You can see what to expect in this brand new trailer, cut just for this occasion:

For you readers scattered throughout the world, never fear. T2’s big cinematic celebration will be coming online throughout the globe. As it currently stands, this is the tour schedule for Judgment Day:

  • August 27, 2026: Germany, LATAM, Czech Republic
  • August 28, 2026: United States, Italy, Poland
  • September 2, 2026: France
  • September 3, 2026: Australia, New Zealand, The Netherlands, Sweden, Hungary
  • September 4, 2026: United Kingdom

The 35th anniversary of Terminator 2: Judgment Day alone is a proper reason to bring the picture back to theaters. But just when you thought the timing couldn’t be better, reading the official statements in this press release invokes some reasons for us all to root for The Connors even harder.

For Better Or Worse, Terminator 2 Is More Timely Than Ever

Making a classic that lasts is pretty spectacular, and T2 is a movie that absolutely fits that bill. However the talk surrounding its 35th anniversary actually proves why it’s age is only a number – Guns N’ Roses single and all. That case is best made by James Cameron himself, courtesy of this official statement:

T2 was made for theatres, and our lovingly-prepared 3D version, coming back to the big screen, is the absolute best way to see the film.  I believe it’s safe to do spoilers after 35 years, so SPOILER ALERT: the good guys win against the AI superintelligence!  And maybe that’s a message of hope we all could use this summer.

Nothing like reliving a movie where the horrors of Linda Hamilton’s Cassandra-style freedom fighter start to come together, in a world that’s standing on a precipice of self-destruction, via Artificial Intelligence. It’s a lesson we’ve heard time and again, and if you ask me (and James Cameron) we need another refresher course.

The modern lessons that Terminator 2: Judgment Day can teach us aren’t merely confined to its sci-fi narrative. As you can read in the following remarks from StudioCanal CEO Anna Marsh, the fact that we’re getting this reissue is also something Hollywood should be taking notes on:

This collaboration has been thrilling, and we cannot wait for audiences to mark Judgment Day in theatres all over the world this August. The continued restoration and discovery of classic and revolutionary cinema is the cornerstone of our strategy and it’s particularly gratifying to see the scale of this celebratory re-release come to fruition.

All of this talk about rejecting A.I. and restoring classic movies has me feeling a special sort of way. When you really think about it, Terminator 2 is the perfect title to re-examine the big questions always present when technology leaps forward. I mean, could a machine have come up with something as beautiful as T2’s video store promo reel, seen below:

Video Stores! That’s something else I really miss. If you’re ready to dive into the nostalgia, while keeping a firm eye on the future, Terminator 2 will start making its cinematic rounds on August 27th.
