With news recently coming out about Destin Daniel Cretton not only directing a Hawaii Five-0 movie AND Spider-Man 5 AND Naruto AND Shang-Chi 2, the question does come up: will he have any time to do all of these movies?
So the recent Deadline piece with Destin about Hawaii Five-0 and Spider-Man 5 does paint a picture about him being one of the most in-demand directors in Hollywood right now. I mean, he helmed one of the most successful movies of all time, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. He sat down with friend of THS Brandon Davis for an interview and while he was a bit tight-lipped about his plans, some nuggets came out about Shang-Chi 2 and other films on the docket.
Here’s what he had to say about Shang-Chi 2 in that interview:
“Yeah, its still happening.” When pressed for it to hurry up, he replied, “You’ve gotta tell the industry that!”
Simu Liu also had some interesting tidbits about Shang-Chi 2 when talking to BD in a separate interview.
Simu Liu started with a joke in response to his return after all this years, “Just like we always dreamt!” as if to say he wanted to come back sooner, a topic he has not been shy about on social media or in interviews. “He’s been around, right? There’s been a couple of moments where he should’ve… helped?” Liu said told BD. “Honestly, it’s all good and it’s all incredible. I try not to lose the perspective that, 7 years ago, I was a fan…It has been an amount of time that has passed but, you know, now we get to meet a slightly more mature and self-assured version of Shang-Chi. He’s come into his own a little bit.”
A Busy Schedule And No Real Answers Yet
While we know that Destin Daniel Cretton is directing a whole slew of movies, we don’t really have any indication of what’s coming first or what order they’re happening after that. One would think that Spider-Man 5 would be next because Marvel and Sony want to strike while the iron is hot, but there was already a pretty sizeable gap between Spider-Man: No Way Home and Brand New Day. Its already been five years since the release of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and we don’t have any word on that either. With a new deal with Paramount for Hawaii Five-0 and the Naruto film at Lionsgate, that’s a busy schedule.
That might be the reason why Wonder Man couldn’t get off the ground for a second season. Destin Daniel Cretton was involved with the first season of that show in a big way, but this busy schedule coming up might have changed how much he could be involved with the second season.
With Shang-Chi finally showing back up in the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday we could at least get some clarification on what his character has been up to and could do in the future. That might give more information on what order these upcoming films for Destin Daniel Cretton could go in.
Either way, it’s a busy and exciting time for one of the most in-demand directors in Hollywood right now.
