Has the hype around the mystery of who the new James Bond is ever been higher?
James Bond Draft #1 Done
While speculation, rumors, and random confirmations have been floating around, Steven Knight (“Peaky Blinders”) has been hard at work on the script for the new James Bond film for Amazon MGM Studios, which Denis Villeneuve is directing. Knight recently and quietly confirmed that the first draft of Bond 26 script is completed while on U.K.’s Greatest Hits Radio with Zoe Ball, according to Variety. “I’m nodding silently,” he said, when asked if the script was done.
It’s understandable he has to keep things close to the vest, considering how much of a secret the 007 casting has been. These past two years at Cinemacon, fans have expected the announcement only to be delayed again. The super busy writer called writing Bond a “more than bucket list” thing, that it was a sense of “doing my duty for King and country by taking this thing on.” That feels a lot heavier than just making a secret spy film, so it’s understandable how much is riding on this for Knight and the studio.
“I’m absolutely loving doing it. It’s an honor to be asked. And believe it’s going to be so good. I really do believe it’s going to be amazing,” Knight also said.
Making of a New Script With an Iconic Character
And that’s not even all. Earlier in the week, Knight dropped a little hint that he already knows who got cast in the film. On BBC Radio 4’s “Today” program, he was asked whether he’d written the script with an actor already in mind or just based on prior knowledge he had of Bond, to which he responded:
“It’s a bit of both. It does make life a little bit easier if you know who that person is, but also you have to write the character, not the actor.”
Funnily enough, these news crumbs come on the heels of Gary Oldman randomly saying Bond had been cast and his “Slow Horses” co-worker Jack Lowden was the guy for the job. Also, the news that Warner Bros. Pictures is moving ahead with the Bond spoof, “Get Smart,” with John Mulaney in talks to star. The thirst for the spy genre is high or, at least, that’s what the studios are betting on.
