Hi…I’m Chad.
Chad Powers has continually confused and delighted audiences. The Hulu series stars Glen Powell as Russ Holliday, a disgraced college football star. When he tries to play ball again, he takes on the persona of “Chad Powers” and the rest is South Georgia Catfish history. Now that the show has returned for season 2, with all episodes streaming on Hulu, fans are wondering when we’ll get news on a third season.
I spoke with Powell on the Paley Museum carpet for season 2 of the show where we talked about music, the final moments, and what Powell and co-creator Michael Waldron set up for a potential season 3. As of right now, there is no news on whether or not the series will return but the show itself did set up a pretty shocking future for the show if it does. Spoilers for Chad Powers season 2 lie ahead.
The end of season 1 had Ricky (Perry Mattfeld) finding out about Chad’s secret. It led to most of season 2 being Ricky and Danny (Frankie A. Rodriguez) trying their best to keep the charade up. But by the end, Danny runs to the worst possible ally to keep Chad playing: Tricia Yeager (Wynn Everett).
As I spoke with Powell on the carpet, I ended our chat by telling him that I do love how he and Waldron always set up a thrilling next season at the end and he teased “It’s going to be great.”
Glen Powell talks Bruce Springsteen for Ricky/Russ
The end of season 2 brought Ricky and Russ together in a way that fans have been waiting for. The final moments included the two finally kissing each other before Coach Jake Hudson (Steve Zahn) found them. As they’re kissing, Bruce Springsteen’s song “Tougher Than the Rest” is playing. On his album Tunnel of Love, it is a deeper cut in Springsteen’s discography. So when I had the chance to talk to Powell about the music of Chad Powers, I took it.
“It’s really interesting,” Powell said. “Waldron and I really talk in music quite often. A lot of musical touch points become kind of inspiration points to kind of go ‘Hey, here’s how this montage…this is going to get us off’ and we literally will say it’s fishing in the dark. ‘Here’s the general feeling and here’s why it’s either emotional or it’s energetic or kind of like a wink and a nod’ and music is so important in film or television. But I think what’s really fun is being with Waldron and I are the same age. So we have a lot of the same musical touch points. We don’t come from different eras, our sense of nostalgia exists in the same moment, in the same time. So it weirdly works when we’re talking songs and I think for the demographic of the show, which is sort of our age and below, I think it’s sort of the sweet spot. We’re really hitting the songs that kind of bring people a lot of, not even just nostalgia or sentimental, but sometimes underused songs and songs used in different ways that they’re not typically heard in.”
