Walter Koenig, known for his work in the Star Trek franchise as Pavel Chekov, has passed away at the age of 90. Koenig lovingly played the Russian navigator of the USS Enterprise from the series’ creation in 1966 and went on to star in the Star Trek movies with the rest of the original cast. Outside of his work on Star Trek, Walter Koenig was a prolific star of the stage.
Koenig played the young navigator who excitedly would tell Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) whatever was necessary about the ship but with his iconic Russian accent, leading to many quoting the character when thinking about the series. Well, that and Chekov’s love of Vodka. But throughout the years, Koenig has continued to graciously be a part of the fandom of Star Trek, often attending conventions and meeting fans of the 60 year old franchise.
Walter Koenig’s portrayal of Chekov is one that fans continue to love. When the late Anton Yelchin played the role in the Kelvin Verse films, he truly honored what Koenig did before him and kept many of the same characteristics of the character alive in his performance. That’s a testament to Koenig’s original performance and the legacy that it has among fans. It isn’t easy to be a beloved character in a franchise like Star Trek and yet Koenig’s work as Chekov is one of the most beloved parts of the entire franchise and he will be missed.
He follows his wife, Judy Levitt, and their son, Andrew Koenig in death. His daughter, Danielle Koenig, and the rest of the Koenig family have our deepest sympathies. Reports state that Danielle and his niece were at his side when he passed in his home in North Hollywood. Koenig was 90 years old and reportedly died of old age.
