When Ghost in the Shell released in Japanese theaters in November 18, 1995; it instantly became a seminal work in science fiction. That perception only increased when this cyberpunk anime film by director Mamoru Oshii and writer Kazunori Itō (with original story by Masamune Shirow) made its American debut just months later on March 29, 1996. The film was and is a masterpiece of cinema, giving us one of our first looks into a dystopian world overrun by out-of-control technology.
It was such a masterpiece that Ghost in the Shell went on to influence other masterpieces such as The Wachowskis’ The Matrix in 1999, Steven Spielberg’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence in 2001, and even the much more recent James Cameron’s Avatar in 2009. Honestly, those movies in their current form would likely not even exist if Major Motoko Kusanagi never leapt off the top of that skyscraper in the pouring rain. It’s why this bit of news is getting so much attention.
Lionsgate is proud to announce that they are bringing the 1995 classic Ghost in the Shell back to theaters for its 30th anniversary. In fact, that anime film classic will make that return to over 800 theaters all across North America, and in a 4K remaster to boot. All taking place on September 18, 2026. Ghost in the Shell Fans Get to Experience 4K Remaster for 30th Anniversary
Honestly, this will be quite the treat for a whole host of fans. From anime fans to cyberpunk fans to fans of cult classic movies, a 4K remaster of Ghost in the Shell will appeal to quite a few audiences. Just look at the crisp lines and lack of visual artifacts in that trailer. For cinephiles, this looks quite delicious indeed based on that remaster alone.
On top of that, Ghost in the Shell feels quite relevant in this day and age. With billionaires pushing AI everywhere they can in a bid to make that technology as out-of-control as possible, it makes a movie about the dangers of out-of-control technology feel like a rebuke of that. The fact that this movie is also about the dangers of government corruption is also quite relevant given what the American government is like in our current day and age. All in all, it’s a movie so relevant that watching it will leave you thinking quite a bit about our current situation.
