Horror once again proved its value at the box office this weekend. While major franchises and established brands continued to occupy the charts, it was Backrooms that completely stole the show, delivering a breakout debut that vastly exceeded expectations and demonstrated the continued drawing power of original horror concepts.
Backrooms Becomes a Horror Sensation
Backrooms exploded to an $81.5 million opening weekend.

That result wasn’t just a win, it was a complete blowout. Tracking suggested an opening between $25 million and $50 million, while a $35 million debut seemed like the most realistic outcome. Instead, the film more than doubled that prediction and delivered one of the biggest surprises of the year.
The viral appeal of the concept clearly translated into ticket sales far more effectively than anticipated. Horror has consistently punched above its weight in recent years, and Backrooms may be the genre’s biggest success story yet in 2026.
Obsession Keeps Building Momentum

Obsession earned $26.4 million.
Even with a major horror phenomenon arriving, the thriller continued to thrive. Rather than collapsing under the weight of new competition, it posted another excellent weekend and further established itself as one of the season’s strongest performers.
Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu Drops to Third
Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu brought in $25.0 million.
After opening atop the chart last weekend, the latest Star Wars adventure experienced a substantial decline. While the franchise remains a major draw, it clearly ceded the spotlight to this week’s breakout horror hit.
Michael Begins to Wind Down
Michael added $11.7 million.
The year’s biggest opening continues to generate revenue, but its run is entering a more mature phase. Even so, its overall performance remains among the most impressive theatrical success stories of 2026.
The Breadwinner Opens in Fifth
The Breadwinner debuted with $7.5 million.
While overshadowed by the bigger stories above it, the film still managed to secure a top five finish. In a weekend dominated by horror and established franchises, finding room on the chart is an accomplishment in itself.
Next Weekend’s Predictions
Next weekend sees the return of another horror franchise with Scary Movie, which is tracking between $43 million and $53 million. The series has remained surprisingly durable over the years, and the combination of nostalgia and recognizable branding should help drive a strong opening. A debut around $50 million appears likely.
Meanwhile, Masters of the Universe is tracking between $25 million and $35 million. While the property has a passionate fanbase, awareness outside that core audience appears more limited. A launch around $28 million seems like the most realistic outcome at the moment.
As always, we’ll find out next week.
