In addition, Star Wars: Starfighter will also hit the biggest premium format possible when it hits theaters next summer. It’s a massive opportunity for Lucasfilm and the larger Star Wars brand. Star Wars: Starfighter Confirmed for IMAX 70 MM
Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds will be getting their day in IMAX 70mm. Star Wars: Starfighter heads for the biggest premium format on May 28 2027. The duo will be pulling double duty after their stint in the galaxy far, far away. Marvel Studios united the filmmaker and his star in their new Ghost Rider movie slated for 2028.
But, all eyes are on Star Wars as the 50th Anniversary is proving to be an actual event. Seeing A New Hope in 70mm IMAX will be the hottest ticket of early 2027 for longtime fans. The movie has never been screened in this format. So, the exclusivity is going to make those seats hard to come by. You couldn’t ask for a bigger announcement to build anticipation for the anniversary.
What’s The Deal With Starfighter?
Star Wars: Starfighter is looking to amp up those traditional adventure vibes people have come to expect from this franchise. Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling recently hit the stage at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Expo to pull the tarp off of their new project. Gosling’s hero Kade is a bit of a rogue. But, his fancy new spaceship holds the key to this adventure. Here’s what the director had to say.
Levy explained on-stage, “Starfighter embodies the themes of hope, family and adventure that have always been core to Star Wars, but our story takes place in a period of time that has never been seen before which has been a privilege to create and explore.”
What’s The New Movie About?
In Starfighter, when a cynical rogue is confronted by his mysterious past, he is hurled into a dangerous adventure across the galaxy that puts him on a crash course with destiny.
The film stars Gosling (Drive, Blade Runner, La La Land, Place Beyond the Pines, Barbie) as Kade Auberon, as well as Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.

It’s no secret that fans have wanted a little bit more from Star Wars in recent years. The Mandalorian and Grogu came out earlier this year to decent response from audiences. But, not the kind of box office excess that the franchise has been known for.
With Starfighter, Gosling and Levy are out to turn the page into a brand new era of the franchise. And this year has demonstrated that IMAX 70mm makes these movies into bona fide events. Getting the original in this vaunted format is just cherry on top of an already loaded sundae.
