Tom Rhys Harries is a chameleon. Or is that Matt Hagen? In the latest trailer for the DCU film Clayface, we’re given a deeper look into Matt Hagen/Clayface’s ability to change his appearance and what exactly losing control of your look can do to an actor. Based on the villain from Batman’s Rogue’s Gallery, the film is a perfect horror addition to the DCU slate and…well, if you get queasy over body horror you might want to close your eyes with this one.
Written by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, the first foray into a starring role for Clayface is directed by Speak No Evil director James Watkins. The rest of the cast joining Harries includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James.
The latest trailer shows Matt and Dr. Bates (Ackie) working together to fix the scars left after an attack. Her procedure though leaves him with the ability essentially shape shift and takes him down a dark path. What is absolutely horrifying about the trailer in question is the body horror elements present in the film. Do we need to see a man cut his skin on his eye while riding on a bumpy plane? Probably not but Clayface is seemingly ready to make us face that fear.
Clayface is described as follows: “Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting-edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self… but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiraling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.”
