Weekend Box Office: Devil Wears Prada 2 Barely Beats Mortal Kombat II

This weekend’s box office turned into a much tighter race at the top than expected, with two major releases battling closely for first place. While one sequel managed to hold onto the crown, the margin separating the top two films was razor thin.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 Stays on Top

The Devil Wears Prada 2 remained in first place with $43.0 million.

After a strong debut last weekend, the sequel posted another impressive frame and narrowly held off a major challenger. The film continues to benefit from strong audience awareness and solid word of mouth, helping it maintain momentum heading into its second weekend.

Mortal Kombat II Nearly Takes First

Mortal Kombat II opened with $40.0 million.

The sequel landed right within its projected range, though slightly below the $48,000,000 estimate. Even so, this is still a strong debut for a franchise driven heavily by fan enthusiasm and action spectacle.

More importantly, it came surprisingly close to overtaking The Devil Wears Prada 2 for the top spot. That near photo finish highlights how competitive the marketplace remained this weekend.

Michael Continues to Perform

Michael earned $36.5 million.

Even with two high profile releases ahead of it, the film continues to generate major revenue. Its staying power has been one of the strongest stories of the spring box office season.

The Sheep Detectives Breaks Out

The Sheep Detectives debuted with $15.9 million.

The family comedy slightly outperformed expectations and landed above the $14,000,000 prediction. Lighter competition in the family space likely helped give it room to connect with audiences looking for an alternative to the larger blockbusters.

Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft – The Tour Live in 3D Opens Softly

Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft – The Tour Live in 3D opened with $7.0 million.

The concert film debuted below its projected range and under the $10 million prediction. While Billie Eilish has a massive fanbase, concert films remain a niche theatrical draw unless they break into true event territory.

Next Weekend’s Predictions

Next weekend brings a slate made up mostly of smaller releases, meaning the overall box office hierarchy likely will not change very much. With no major blockbuster arriving to shake up the marketplace, holdovers such as The Devil Wears Prada 2, Mortal Kombat II, and Michael should continue dominating theaters.

Unless one of the smaller newcomers significantly overperforms, expect next weekend’s chart to look very similar to this one.

As always, we’ll find out next week.
